*WORLD VITILIGO AWARENESS DAY - June 25*
For years, I’ve felt the stigma of having vitiligo. The stares, the occasional comment/questions (what’s that, what’s wrong with you, did you get burned, etc), even the less rare pulling away from a handshake when one sees the discolored skin. As I get older, I am trying hard to embrace that this condition makes me unique. I’m trying to accept that each morning more of me is changing .. a new white spot, a hair patch, etc. Today being World Vitiligo Day, here are some facts to raise awareness:
- It is an autoimmune disorder. The body’s immune system destroys melanocytes which are cells that produce skin color. The result is white patches called macules.
- Vitiligo is not contagious
- Vitiligo affects approx. 1% of the population. There are no boundaries of race, gender, ethnicity or age.
- The cause is unknown.
- There is no cure. There are some available treatments to lessen the visibility. They are not effective on all and usually not covered by insurance.
- Many with vitiligo suffer from mental health issues due to the impacts it has on your appearance
