The UCLA Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies, the Department of African American Studies, and the UCLA Institute for Society and Genetics invite you to attend The Coroner's Silence: An Evening with Terence Keel

Dr. Terence Keel will deliver a lecture on his book, The Coroner’s Silence: Death Records and the Hidden Victims of Police Violence, examining how race shapes forensic science and the investigation of death in the United States. The talk will explore the historical and contemporary implications of medical and legal systems that determine cause of death, raising critical questions about inequality, institutional accountability, and the production of scientific knowledge. by @socgenucla

This week we are featuring the podcast "on People Stuff", hosted by Dan and Michael, who invited UCLA’s Michelle Rensel 🐦‍⬛ avian behavioral endocrinologist, stress researcher, and self-described “person who once stressed so hard she woke her roommate”—to help untangle one of the most durable concepts in human (and animal) life: stress. 🫩

Across the episode, they cover:
• Why “stress” means something different in a lab, a classroom, and during fieldwork at 5 a.m.
• How Americans ended up getting prescriptions to attend book clubs 👀
• What Denmark’s approach to “going out on stress leave” teaches us about culture and work
• Why teenagers’ brains are doing exactly what evolution designed them to do
• And whether self-discipline culture might actually need… a counter-Reformation

It’s part physiology, part anthropology, and part “please stop treating yourself like a malfunctioning productivity app.”

Takeaway: Stress is universal, complex, culturally shaped, and—sometimes—very funny. Also, if you find yourself grinding your teeth loud enough to wake your roommates, you are not alone.
