There’s a difference between criticizing a government and treating Jewish identity like a political contamination.

A lot of Jews have noticed the shift. The pause after we introduce ourselves. The social calculations. The need to prove we’re “one of the good ones.” The way “Zionist” is sometimes used less as a belief and more as a social warning label.

People keep insisting this moment is different from the past. Many of us are noticing how familiar it feels.

I’ve gone back and forth about sharing this. I’m still scared to hit publish, but here goes.

My twin brother is living with schizophrenia, and watching someone you love struggle with an illness you cannot fix is a kind of grief I wouldn’t wish on anyone.

And now, with AI and social media potentially reinforcing delusions, I’m navigating a world I don’t fully understand and honestly don’t know how to handle.

I’ve been told there’s only so much I can do if he doesn’t want help. But how do you accept that when it’s your twin? Someone you’ve known since before you were born?

My biggest fear is looking back one day and wondering if I could have done more. If I should have fought harder. If I gave up too soon.
I’m sharing this with love, not judgment. I’m not looking to expose him or discuss his private struggles. I’m looking for understanding, guidance, and maybe a little hope.

If you’re a sibling, a family member, or someone who’s navigated something similar, please DM me privately. I’d genuinely love to hear from you, especially if you’ve found resources or approaches that helped.

I’m not asking anyone to fix this. I’m just trying to find a way forward.

Years ago, I started practicing beginning each day with gratitude.

Before the noise, before the work and obligations. Before the world starts asking things of me. Just a moment to acknowledge that I’m here for another day, and that there is a lot to be grateful for, even when life is complicated.

It changed the way I move through the day. It reminds me to begin from a place of appreciation rather than expectation.

But this is nothing new.

Modeh Ani (מוֹדֶה אֲנִי) is a traditional Jewish morning prayer.

It expresses gratitude for the return of our soul, for the gift of waking up, and for the simple, extraordinary fact that we have been given another day of life.

No elaborate ritual. Just a moment before the day begins.

I love that Judaism has made space for this for generations.
