Navy Long (龙) was an immigrant to America in the 90s, arriving as a Cambodian refugee after the civil war of the 80s. A seamstress both in her homeland and here, she wove resilience into every piece bringing the Cambodian community across North Carolina together through connection and custom clothing until her retirement in 2024. Her strength, skill, and perseverance continue to live on through her grandchildren and I’m so very honored that she asked me to continue her legacy, carrying forward the business.

While the other kids were outside playing, I was stuck inside her sewing shop, learning from her. She always told me, “In this life, you need many skills... the more you know, the more useful you’ll be.” That part always stuck with me- the “more useful” part.

So it made sense that I grew up wanting to be a fashion designer. I enrolled at a local university but dropped out twice due to crippling depression. I’m better now.

Somehow, many roads led me back to these sewing machines- the ones she gave me this past weekend.

A perpetual sunrise ⟢

Perhaps growth is learning to find beauty in the uncertainty, to trust what is yet to come without needing to know what it will be. I’m learning that there is still light beyond what I can see.

Also, wading through a slippery river in this (when one can neither swim nor balance particularly well) may not be the wisest decision…

From the CassB Studio to NYC ❀

As the designer, Cass assigned me, (her assistant) to take creative liberties with her vision for a two-piece veil. She gave me crystal organza, an assortment of beads, a few inspiration photos, and told me to run with it.

From there, I interpreted her vision through my own creative lens, playing with floral sizes, shapes, and (literally) fire to create something that felt both delicate and dramatic.

Oh, the things this woman has me doing~

Despite having completely opposite aesthetics, I’m so grateful to have a mentor and designer like @cassbbydesign to learn from. It’s rather lovely how two very different creative spirits can complement each other so productively in the CassB atelier.

Perhaps one of these days, she’ll murder me. We’ll see.

Lately, in le atelier~

After putting one panel together, I realized it would be much more efficient to assemble the top panels at the side seams, then join the sheer panels at the side seams, and finally assemble the rest of the skirt at the side seams before sandwiching all the layers together.

(The absolute worst nightmare imaginable for a seamstress’ finger happened to mine… At least my tetanus shot is officially up to date.) ദ്ദി ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ
