The path to creation is rarely a straight line ~ more often, it’s a mountain - unsteady, long silences between steps. For months, we waited for the right moment. But there is no right moment. Variations on adorning some photos with plants and shells and rocks that I’ve slowly gathered along the way. From Portugal to Siargao to Cuba to Sunshine Coast, It’s easy to be greedy and excited when you are surrounded by so much beauty. I try to be mindful not to take something from its home, not to take too much; I think it’s good to ask a shell or rock or leaf and say: “Would you like to come with me and travel to another place? Maybe one day I will return you, or I would also love for you to be my eternal muse for an art project, something I can admire at my alter, or a special little gifted reminder of magic and grounded energy to a friend that I love.” Then pause and see how it feels. Anyone else remember collecting little objects and curating them in a line along a windowsill as a child? Pressing flowers into a book. Making notes after a science class field trip. I spend too much time on screens and sadly this was the first time I really printed my work (on super cheap office paper at Staples—ahh, I gotta step it up. If anyone has tips on printing images, feel free to drop advice in the comments) but I’ve been wanting to explore collage these days and more multi-media visual arts. Do you prefer the earth adorned photos or just the minimalism of the photos in camera? And no, the background is not pita bread, just a textured concrete wall😋 by @socotra_tribe

At the eastern edge of the University of Alberta campus, the brutalist lines of the Fine Arts Building (FAB) perfectly frame a tucked away sculpture garden. The mostly brown sculptures impersonate cubist chameleons and are easy to miss, surrounded by more brown brick. Even the dry grass is bleached of colour and interspersed with mulch. I like colourful spaces, so why am I drawn to this space? Well, the spirit of art and architecture is still alive. A majority of the sculptures appear to be by Royden Mills, a long-time sculpture instructor whose works are noted for exploring spiritual and architectural tensions between materials and space. The sculpture garden is quiet—a secret temple on campus with little foot traffic. I think I passed by this garden just a handful of times when I was at school and was reminded of it as I was thinking about where to shoot @socotra_tribe’s new collection. A brand created by artists, I needed to find somewhere artsy in Edmonton, which is not exactly an easy task. I was looking at their incense packaging in the grass and the packaging reminded me of this sculpture garden, tucked away in my memory. When we were able to coordinate a time to all meet up and shoot with little notice, the lighting was different from when I went to location scout (middle pics). The dark brown brick sucked all remaining light in the early evening. No bounce. Neutral monochromatic vibes, which worked out. I was craving some colour though and given that @socotra_tribe is currently based in Bali and employs Balinese artisans to help create some of their products, I was inspired to provide a plants and incense offerings to my photos and the beautiful muses in them, referencing “canang sari,” the daily offerings made by Balinese Hindus as a gesture of gratitude to the gods and to maintain spiritual balance. by @socotra_tribe
