Future Systems:

The UK is facing an ecological decline with soil degradation, biodiversity collapse, fragile food supply chains and a disconnection between citizens and their natural environment. This resulted in a crucial shift within our education system and our relationship to food and natural elements.

The Tolworth Ecology Hub is located in Tolworth Court Farm Fields, using hands on learning as a means to educate locals on the different ecosystems of the area. During the programme, students will learn a range of technical and soft skills and develop an understanding of sustainable literacy, applying that knowledge into the area. As part of the 2046 local and general elections, students will design their own menu, incorporating different wildlife elements into their dishes, mimicking the different ecosystems found in the Court Farm Fields. This meal is not about eating but relearning our relationship with nature through ecology, soil science and regenerative systems.

All electoral candidates, councillors, MPs and rotating citizens will be required to take part in this ecological dinner hosted in Tolworth Ecological Hub. Using data based on the landscape’s health, the courses will be linked to measurable metrics, holding the guests accountable for their actions, forcing policymakers to confront the consequences of their governance. Only after completing the dinner and signing the Landscape Health Oath could a candidate’s name appear on the ballot.

Through sensory engagement their perceptions are altered, making this a unique experience where they can imagine a world where human and non-human beings can coexist more harmoniously. Once completed, students will graduate from the programme and will be able to mentor the following set of students following the next elections, five years later. This gap allows the system to develop, adopting new skills each year.
In this system, the hierarchical divide between policymakers and students is blurred, both learn from each other, having a common interest in making Tolworth more sustainable and smoothly integrating urban and green areas. by @sofiacr_designs

FUTURE SYSTEMS:

Initial ideas: Experimenting with oyster shell structures and materials.
Shells, skins and peels are often seen as waste. We eat what is inside then discard of the protective layer, however, they often have multiple applications. As designers we must redefine their purpose, giving them a new meaning in the world of design.
Oyster shells have the ability to filtrate and purify water, reducing pollutants and providing healthier water for the future - considering another system.

Whilst I enjoyed working with this material, I changed my idea to be more fitting to my area of study, Tolworth. by @sofiacr_designs

FUTURE YOU:

I imagine this scenario to take place in the next three to seven years. I want it to be realistic, actionable and still allowing for new systems, habits and job roles to emerge.

It is now 2032, and we live in a world where climate action is no longer optional with governments, organisations and local authorities facing increased pressure to meet legislations, net-zero targets and public expectations.
Companies feel a huge sense of overwhelmingness, now obliged to think in a more circular manor, applying new materials, ethical principles and measuring impact. In response to this, Sustainable Ideating Consultants become essential and a pivotal figure, aiding organisations to rethink systems, not just products.
There is a need for designers who can help rethink supply chains and repair systems through circular approaches. Companies must show real impact not just for their public image. Consultants can help design solutions and shift internal culture to support sustainable practices, emphasising sustainability as a core rather than a side department.
As an Ideating Consultant, I aid organisations into generating, testing and applying sustainable ideas that redesign their products, services, ethos and environmental impact. My work incorporates design thinking, sustainability strategizing, innovation consulting and systems thinking. Through workshops and co-design, I work with my clients to develop new circular and regenerative concepts, ensuring solutions stick to ethical standards. by @sofiacr_designs

FUTURE YOU:

Initially, my future scenario focused on how the present can impact the near future to create a symbiotic utopian (and hopefully achievable) future. By that I mean using the skills we have now to have a world where nature and humans can live harmoniously together and, in a way, let nature win back its power. Whilst this still remained prevalent within my research, I shifted my focus to what I was good at, what I could learn and what I could offer in a role.
I have split my research into four main areas:
My Experience, My Inspirations, My Interests and My Future. Whilst they all have different subthemes and avenues, sustainability is at the core of them. In my practice, work experience and additional courses, I have been motivated by biophilia and biomaterials, referring to designers like Neri Oxman and Oliver Heath, however, I have found that my current interests are steering towards something more stable and durable. By this I mean looking at systems and reshaping design thinking rather than concentrating on the experimental side of working with food waste biomaterials. Whilst delving into the different avenues, I have found it useful to cancel out what I don’t want to do as much as what I would like to do.

From this, I started researching professionals and companies that resembled this such as Arup, Christopher Webb and The Now Work . It was valuable for me to get in touch with people and ask them how they felt the future of design jobs would change in response to the climate crisis as well as the skills needed. That is what led me to look at Green Skills, tying into Design Education and Consultancy - how to properly equip designers, professionals and students with the skillsets they need for the future.

Inspired by Jessica Charlesworth’s talk, I expanded my research to systems and practices in a utopian future that would be inherently more environmentally conscious. by @sofiacr_designs

Design for Social Innovation: Hands Together

In this module I designed a non-profit organisation, ‘Hands Together’, supporting people with impaired hand mobility, particularly arthritis and Parkinson’s disease.

Initially, I wanted to go down the product route but after a lot of research I found that there were lots of pre-existing products. Nevertheless, I experimented with different soft materials to create modular grip prototypes. I was more concerned in people’s perceptions towards the conditions and how physical and social stimulation could lead to a better way of life and as a result reduce the speed of aging.

The insights I got from the interviews made me realise that I wanted to focus on early/young diagnosis and how this can suddenly change someone’s life. From this, I centralised my study to ways in which people can regain a sense of control over their life and have a sense of belonging. Often with invisible illnesses, there is a lack of awareness and understanding as to how someone’s daily life can completely change and the things they used to love doing are taken away from them. BUT, it doesn’t have to be that way.

Hands Together aims to bring people together in a safe space where they can share experiences and take part in workshops. As well as this, it partners with pre-existing assistive product brands and helps people find the appropriate product for them whilst teaching them how to use it.

The feedback I received from medical professionals as well as U3A meetings made the whole experience feel a lot more real. “Hands Together covers everything - you have considered the mental struggle as well as the physical” (2025) by @sofiacr_designs

The morse code represents people’s responses to a Questionnaire I created regarding people’s memories and perceptions towards TFL. The specific question was “What comes to mind when I say nostalgia/ memory within TFL?” To which people replied with “Going up down the escalators… Hustle and bustle travelling at rush hour, quite fun and nostalgic… Old style stations like Swiss Cottage/ St John’s Wood..etc” I then translated this into morse code as a way of making it more visual. This reminded me of brail and we did consider adding an element of this to our prototype so that it was inclusive and followed our exploration of the senses. I also found common themes in people’s responses and created a coloured graphic pattern that also became a visual language in itself. by @sofiacr_designs

Group Project

Sensory Traces:
What if we can reimagine a tube carriage to be an interactive and sensory art space?

As a group, we were very interested in sensory elements within TFL and how that could be linked to memory. Looking at the moquete and the seats on the train and seeing the tear and wear of the fabric as a symbol of memory that holds heritage and also invisible elements like heat. This was developed further with heat scanning by a member of the group. We were also interested in sound and how the sound of the underground has changed over the years, also questioning what the future of sound could be. by @sofiacr_designs

Digital coloured repeated prints using my group member Henry’s visual sound data at Kingston Station. This is part of our brief for TFL where we are looking at memory and nostalgia through sensory elements like sounds, textures and visuals. I am centralising my research on the history of the moquete and the body impressions that are left from users, resulting in the tear and wear of the seat fabric. This shows both a physical and metaphorical sense of memory.

The colours I chose, blue and red, are symbolic of the bar and circle (roundel) that is seen everywhere around London. by @sofiacr_designs

Our recent workshop with @climatefresk was really engaging and inspiring. We spent the day creating visual charts surrounding the climate crisis, focusing on how human activity has resulted in the degradation of the planet, environmentally, economically and socially. We also had very open discussions on our individual responsibility and emotions towards these issues. The colloborative and game-oriented workshop made this very real and it was a great way to educate us on the planet’s current state. This experience has widened my knowledge and has made me reconsider my own actions when it comes to acting more sustainably.

This was a very useful introduction before starting my first session as part of the INU’s Global Citizenship and Sustainable Futures where we looked at the opportunities and challenges within the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. I want to focus on the transformation of education systems to develop awareness, values and skills to address the complex and human-generated issues we face today. by @sofiacr_designs

I have really enjoyed my first few weeks @ma_sustainabledesign at Kingston University. The course has given me an insight into Sustainable Design and how to use different research methods to approach projects briefs. We have been set two briefs “TFL project” and “Design for Aging” - though very different, both have taught me a lot on how to conduct research. I like that these briefs have made me view things differently and even though I maybe wouldn’t have originally chosen these briefs myself, I have gained a lot of knowledge on the importance of designing for and with the user.

I am also very excited to share that I have been accepted to take part in the INU’s Global Citizenship and Sustainble Futures 12 Month Programme.
I hope to expand my knowledge in this field by delving deeper into Climate change and social inequalities, Food security and Circular Economy: production, consumption and reduction of single use plastic.
I am looking forward to working with other students from different backgrounds, exploring global issues and how we can approach them with a sustainable mindset.
