FLICKA ROE: the same artist project, with a different name. I never wanted to release music under the name ‘Sofia Mills’, believe it or not. As some of you may remember, Coffee Breath was originally released under my old username, ‘neoflesh,’ on SoundCloud, Spotify, etc… I was 15 and edgy, what can I say? When I was picked up for the First On Soundcloud campaign in 2021, my manager at the time had told me “If you’re going to change your artist name, now is the time to do it”, and as a 16 year old with little to no knowledge of the music industry or how to brand myself, I panicked and picked the most obvious option: my first and middle name, Sofia Mills. It feels silly to say, but despite it being my own name, it never really felt like me. I wanted there to be some separation; my artist project is part of something bigger, a world I have been subconsciously creating since I was a child, a voice I have been building with every year I grow older. It’s more fluid and more transformative; it feels bigger than me, and it always has. Writing is the only thing I have ever felt I know how to do, the only thing I have ever felt I can do. I know changing an artist’s name is a big risk and a big change that not everybody may get behind, and I have tried my best to reason with myself and avoid doing this for the sake of everything that has happened up until now, for the sake of 16-year-old Sofia and Coffee Breath. I feared I was relinquishing my hard work; I feared giving up my image and my Instagram verification, as shallow as that may sound. But, I have realized that now is as good a time as any to listen to my gut, which has been aching for this change since the days of All My Pals. (1/2, continued in caption) by @sofiamillsmo
