.: moral failure vs. mineral deficient :.

I used to think my exhaustion was a moral failing, not a mineral deficiency.

I'd look at other homeschooling moms who seemed to have endless energy for hikes through the forest, spontaneous learning adventures, baking bread from scratch, and with their own freaking sourdough starters no less... and I'd think to myself...

"wtf, sofia?!?! get your shit together, ffs!!!"

as if I wasn't trying hard enough. like I just must be lazy or some shit. I would question myself - am I depressed? am I broken? am I not cut out for this?

no (well, mostly no). I was just profoundly depleted.
and don't you dare say protein! I swear to the homie above if one more person tells me I need more protein, I'm gonna smack 'em in the head with a ribeye! I'm a carnivore. I'm not proud of it. I'm not entirely ashamed of it either, if I'm being totally honest. but I'm not proud of it. whatever. point is - I eat enough protein. I eat exorbitant amounts of protein. it's not a lack of protein. I promise.

it's also not a lack of willpower. it's minerals. the ones we don't talk about enough because they're not as sexy as the latest superfood.

{magnesium} for the constant muscle tension and restless sleep.

{iron} for the brain fog that made following my children's curiosity feel impossible.

{potassium} for the afternoon crashes that left me scrolling social media instead of reading aloud to my lovies.

{zinc} for the immune system that kept me from feeling well enough to be the best version of myself.

once I understood what my body was actually asking for (and started giving it through our morning smoothies), the overwhelm didn't magically disappear... but the energy to meet it certainly showed up.

no isolated fractionated vitamins that don't even get absorbed by the body. no overflowing pillboxes that make me gag just by looking at 'em. no complicated protocols that I will inevitably stop following cuz ain't nobody got time for that, bro.
nah. just real whole food that rebuilds what's been depleted.

the results?

.: curious, calm, capable :.

I used to wake up and immediately reach for my phone. emails, messages, the whole chaos downloaded into my brain before I'd even taken a real breath. and then I'd wonder why the mornings felt frantic, why the kids picked up on that energy, and why we all carried it throughout the day.

so I changed one thing. I started with stillness.

I woke up early and I didn't speak, I didn't scroll, I didn't start the lesson plans. I sat on the bed with my tea and I just... existed. sometimes I watched the sunrise. sometimes I journaled. sometimes I tended to a plant. sometimes I just breathed and let my nervous system learn what calm feels like.

that one hour of stillness before anyone needed me created a ripple effect.

and so as a result of that... by the time the kids woke up, I wasn't already depleted. I had something of myself to give. the energy in our home shifted from frantic to fun. they started looking forward to the day ahead, as did I. our homeschool days became gentler, more curious, and a whole lot more joyful.

if you're tired of being in a constant battle with your own body, if there's a lack of joy in your day to day life... maybe it's not about doing more. maybe it's about protecting your peace first, so you can show up as the person you know you are deep down... curious, calm, and capable.

start small. start with silence. start with stillness.

.: romanticize routine :.

there is profound pleasure to be found, and felt, in the simplest parts of our day. I often thought I needed to overhaul my entire life to feel better, but the truth is, the magic is in the mundane. all I needed to do was search for it, seek it out, and shift my mind towards it.

a simple twenty minute morning walk does more than just get my steps in. getting morning sunlight in my eyes regulates my circadian rhythm for better sleep. moving my body gently flushes out stagnant energy. leaving my phone in my pocket gives my brain a desperately needed break.

step outside. breathe the crisp (or in my case, swampy) air. notice the light filtering through the trees. listen to the birds sing their good morning songs.

you don't need to be anywhere else right now. connect to the present. connect to your heartbeat and breath. connect to the life all around and inside of you.

start romanticizing the routine parts of your day. the ordinary stuff, the mundane stuff, the boring stuff. you have to do it anyway, so why not try to infuse them with a little magic? I mean, why not? try, and see if you don't start feeling better.

.: raising readers :.

I always take a moment to breathe in the beauty outside our local library. the sky, the trees, and the sweet promise of stories waiting inside. a moment of gratitude for this sanctuary & its defenders of democracy.

as an unschooling mom, my ultimate, unwavering goal has always been simple :: raise readers. raise lifelong learners. raise good human beings.

right now, in the midst of a very real nationwide literacy crisis, holding onto that core value feels incredibly validating. we are watching an anti-intellectualism movement try to take root, where even the deep, defiant act of reading is sometimes reduced to a performative aesthetic. but reading isn't a prop for a picture, and treating it like one is ludicrous. it's a profound, personal practice. it is power.

supporting your library isn't just about books anymore, it's about preserving curiosity in a compliance culture. our librarians are on the front lines of this. they are the fierce, quiet defenders of our democracy, guarding our access to information, imagination, and absolute truth. they hold the line so our children can hold a book.

support your local library.

.: from silent seething to patient presence :.

I used to make breakfast for six kids in total silence, seething inside. not because they were loud or demanding... but because I'd already been awake since 5am, making sure everyone had what they needed for the day ahead, and I hadn't even brushed my teeth yet.

I was so deep in the pattern of deprioritizing my own needs that I didn't even notice how physically and mentally disheveled I'd become. it'd become normal.

one morning I stood at the stove, spatula in hand, and realized - I am grumpy af. I can't remember the last time I felt actual joy following this damn breakfast schedule! a breakfast schedule that I'd dictated, btw. smh.

so I started micro-shifting. not overhauling (as I had a tendency to do. and do often.). not adding more to my plate (as I was hyper-independent thanks to cptsd). just one tiny ritual before the family routine started (harder than you'd think when you're a martyr).

I'd wake up 15 minutes earlier and sit outside with my smoothie or tea. just me. the sunrise. the stillness.

no phone. no mental to-do list. no guilt. just... being. and let me tell you something - something shifted. breakfast didn't feel like a burden anymore, because I'd already filled up my own cup.

the kids didn't change. the routine didn't change. the schedule didn't change. but I did. presence and patience started returning. joy even made an appearance. and this was the beginning of what later became my blueprint for healing and self care.

if you're tired of being in a constant battle with your own body and your own schedule, if the lack of joy in your day to day life is starting to feel unbearable...

comment MORNING and I'll send you the exact 5 micro-rituals I used to reclaim my mornings (and sanity) without adding more overwhelm.

.: carve out a corner of calm in the chaos :.

my mom was a plantlady. my brother and I used her plants as the jungle to our g.i. joes when we were little. and I always loved hearing visitors compliment our home, specifically because of my mom's green thumb. but, because of this, I used to think houseplants were just props or decor... until I realized mine were doing something incredibly therapeutic for me. yes, all the touted mental health benefits of gardening are absolutely true, but did you know that they can also do the heavy lifting for our nervous systems? I didn't.

now that I do, here's what I keep on my nightstand, my desk, and in the corners where I to need focus most ::

🌿 {snake plant * sansevieria} releases oxygen at night, which means better sleep and a calmer baseline the next day

🌿 {peace lily * spathiphyllum} nasa-backed air purifier that filters benzene and formaldehyde (ummm, less brain fog anyone?)

🌿 {pothos * epipremnum aureum} low-maintenance, high-reward! absorbs indoor pollutants and just looks peaceful as hell (my personal top 3 faves!)

🌿 {spider plant * chlorophytum comosum} removes carbon monoxide and xylene, plus it's basically impossible to kill (trust me, I know)

🌿 {lavender * lavandula} the scent alone drops cortisol levels, and having it nearby is like a tiny reset button for overwhelm

I'm not saying plants fix everything, but since I started treating them as nervous system co-regulators (not just impulse buys), my days feel quieter, steadier, calmer. if you're homeschooling, working from home, or just trying to carve out a corner of calm in the chaos, start with one. see what shifts.

which do you plan on adding to your space first? or which is already your favorite? I would love to know!

comment CALM and I'll send you my joyful mornings freebie pdf. it includes 7 family smoothies & 5 micro-rituals that pair beautifully with a room full of green.

.: survival to stillness :. ...

I used to believe the lie too. that if I just woke up earlier, had a better planner, or found the perfect routine... the chaos would stop.

but here's what I learned after years of dealing with chronic pain (and a dab of depression) while trying to keep our homeschooling days flowing ::

the overwhelm wasn't about an inability to manage my time. it was about a nervous system that had been running on survival mode for so long that regulation had become a foreign concept.

❌ more venti coconut mocha lattes at 5am
❌ another productivity hack
❌ guilting myself for "not trying hard enough"

✅ micro-rituals that signal safety to my body
✅ gentle nutrition that supports my adrenals (not depletes them)
✅ permission to move slower so I can actually be present

when I started prioritizing my nervous system through real deep sleep, simple smoothies, and tiny therapeutic rituals woven into our ordinary days... the mornings shifted. not because I magically found more time, but because my body finally felt safe enough to stop running.

if you're tired of being in a constant battle with your own body every single morning, I created something for families like ours.

comment "PEACE" and I'll send you the framework that helped me move from survival to stillness... without overhauling your entire life.

p.s. if I'm being completely honest, I don't think my nervous system was ever even regulated until just a few years ago. cptsd is a bitch! but that's a story for another day. by @sofiasideas

.: pause for plant appreciation :.

I paused for a second this morning to pull out my camera and capture these quiet corners. these trailing plants add so much beauty, life, and coziness to our home... bringing a literal breath of fresh air right to my bookshelf. I love how they sit here, keeping my little bibliophile girls company among the pages.

did you know that keeping greenery indoors actually lowers stress levels, naturally filters & purifies the air we breathe, and can even boost your daily focus and mood? it is so easy to rush past the simple things, but every ordinary moment has the potential to be e x t r a o r d i n a r y...

gosh. I used to take pictures of my plants on the daily. I realized I haven't been doing it since I've been slowly curating my collection down. I've been emotionally detaching myself because I know I can't take them with me. this short moment woke something up inside of me that had been asleep because of it. I don't know what that something is, but I think it's a good thing.

do you guys get emotionally attached to your plants? do you name your plants? do you still pause to appreciate them? by @sofiasideas

.: pressure for perfection :.

for years I thought calm mornings meant I had to wake up hours before everyone else. and I did. I was granola mom extraordinaire - I was building my own business, I was an autism advocate, I was the class parent for all of my kids. I was a super involved crunchy mom with a clean house and a hot husband. I was being and doing all the things, and all before the crack of dawn. I was on top of everything, and everything was perfect, and I wore that shit as a badge of pride...

until I couldn't.

life and circumstances changed and yet I didn't feel the need or desire to adapt? I started homeschooling and had three more kids and I thought nothing needed to change? (I'm super smart, guys. lol!). I'd set an alarm for 5am… hit snooze… feel gnawing guilt… and start the day already "behind". like, why? like seriously why, though - why did I do that to myself?

so dumb. so highly unnecessary. and so very me.

I finally came to my senses because everything fell apart and I could not, for the life of me, get my shit together. that facade of perfection crumbled and I needed to face my new reality. so I stopped fighting for extra time, and started layering tiny moments of stillness into the chaos I already had. without waking up earlier, without adding more tasks, without self-imposed pressure for perfection.

here's what actually worked ::

1. I kept a mug by the kettle the night before...
so the first thing I touched in the morning wasn't my phone, it was something warm. no more 5am alarm. just a tiny proactive step before bed.

2. I claimed a few minutes of silence & stillness for myself...
so that my nervous system settled before I was needed. the kids barely noticed, but I felt it.

3. I opened a window (or door) before I did anything else...
cuz fresh air on my face, even for 10 seconds, pulled me into my body instead of straight into my head.

4. I drank at least half of a smoothie while it was still cold...
so I could nourish myself a lil' somethin' somethin', before the day pulled me every which way. it wasn't a meal plan, it was a moment of self care I could actually keep.

.: the embarrassing gap :.

once upon a time, I hid in the pantry, eating cereal, while my kids ate a real breakfast. again. and by cereal, I mean unhealthy cereal. and by unhealthy cereal, I mean oreos. whatever. point is, the gap between what I fed them and what I fed myself was...

embarrassing.

they got ezekial toast with almond butter, or organic eggs with a side of raw veggies, or overnight oatmeal topped with fresh fruit. I got whatever I could shovel in while running around the house getting shit done. I'm not proud of it, but like, when you're overwhelmed and feeling like hot garbage and you've deprioritized yourself for so long... that's kinda what happens. to me, anyways.

but the gap isn't just about food. it's about the lack of joy in my day to day life. it's about feeling like I don't deserve the same care I pour into my family. it's about being so depleted that I just kinda stop considering myself in those mundane moments.

but it's in those mundane moments where the shift actually happens, not in the big dramatic overhaul (I'm always planning on doing at some point in the future when everything else is "done"). I started with one small thing. a smoothie. then I added micro-rituals. teeny tiny pockets of self-care woven into the rhythm we already had. nothing that required more time or energy than I actually possessed. and slowly (really really slowly)... the gap closed. not perfectly, but enough.

if you're tired of the gap between how you care for everyone else and how you care for yourself, I want to help you close it gently.
comment "MAGIC" and I'll send you the exact framework I used, the 7 family smoothies + 5 micro-rituals that started the transformative shift for our family.

.: calm you're craving :.

I see it all the time... people adding more greens into their smoothies, more veggies into their omelettes, trying to build "perfect" morning routines when the real issue isn't nutritional at all. don't get me wrong - nutrition is important af. but nutrition isn't necessarily the most pressing issue.

it's your nervous system.

if you're starting your day already dysregulated (scrolling before your feet hit the floor, rushing straight into kid chaos, skipping over yourself entirely) no amount of spinach or kale is going to give you that sense of calm you're craving. the magic isn't in the meal prep. it's in the five minutes of stillness you claim for yourself first. it's in the pause between waking and doing.

most of us moms have been conditioned to believe that prioritizing ourselves is somehow selfish or indulgent. that's just straight bullshit. what I've learned after three decades as a mom, and two decades of this work - when you create space for your nervous system to settle before the day begins, everything else flows differently.

the overwhelm softens, the reactivity eases, the best version of yourself shows up. and because of that, you can make the space needed to raise readers & lifelong learners; you can set the pace for child-led learning & teachable moments. you actually have capacity to be present with your kids, to navigate your daily life with joy, to habitually make magic of the mundane with the people who matter most.

so before you add another thing to your morning, ask yourself - am I giving my body a chance to regulate first?

every ordinary moment has the potential to be extraordinary…

.: solitude before sunrise :.

before the day asks anything of you... take a little time outside just for you. feel your footsteps, your feet connecting to the ground. breathe in that (hopefully) fresh air. listen to the sounds of the world waking up all around you as you notice the sky beginning to shift...

there is something lovely about stepping outside before sunrise. a quiet walk, some gentle movement, and maybe a little space for your thoughts... space to notice something beyond the to-do list.

walking can support your mood and help ease stress. the pre-dawn part isn’t required. it’s simply an option if you enjoy the quiet and solitude.

if you’re rested, choose a familiar, well-lit route and take a short sunrise walk. see how you feel.
