The countryside is a place of radical innovation💖

3.2 million students in Malawi don’t have access to desks at school. But what if plastic waste could be diverted from landfills or burning, and instead become the raw material for durable, beautiful, flat-pack, no-tool assembly school desks for students in rural and remote settings? This year I got the chance to explore this idea at school, in the lab, with @peninsulapreciousplastics, and ultimately in Malawi, building BloomBox 5.0 with my team - a solar powered upcycled furniture maker space. Seeing BloomBoxes light up with the energy and imagination of students and teachers is the highlight of my life. School desks and stools are now in production in Blantyre. And in partnership with the Government of Malawi, we might have the chance to build many more.

This July 4th, I followed a pink shipping container across borders during an international crisis. 🌍

While thousands of Malawians were forced to make the long journey from South Africa to Malawi, our team was moving something in the same corridor: an upcycled furniture makerspace.

The pursuit of hopeful ideas still matters… perhaps most of all during times of crisis. And moonshot dreams are best achieved with diverse teams. This week, we open the doors of the 5th ever BloomBox in Malawi. Optimism prevails once more.💡

Dear future roommate,

I’m waiting for you in our new apartment and picturing you bursting through the door. I can’t wait to find out about you, and about what amazing things led you to this moment. I’m pretty nervous, too, to be in this city and not know anyone – are you nervous?

About these boxes – they’re filled with odds and ends. There’s even an entire solar panel in there that I made with my friends. We were trying to build a car that raced off sunlight. Are you interested in solar power? It doesn’t matter if not, because I’m interested in everything.

What else? I’m close with my family, who I owe every good thing about myself to. I will work hard every day to make their faith in me worthwhile. I have the most talented friends on the planet who I never thought I’d miss as much as I do right now. They will be surgeons, designers and revolutionaries; but they will also be home to my favorite couches to crash on, in the new cities where they’re awaiting their new roommates.

By the way, I want to be an architect; the kind that solves the housing crisis and climate change because I’ve been lucky enough to have gone to university at a place where limits were not placed on our dreams, and our voices carried enough weight to actually shape the world in some small way.

I moved here, for the first time in my life, without a master plan, to do something completely different. The more I learn about the problems I care about, the more I realize I don’t know enough to solve them. But I’m excited to try. And after 4 years at the school of my dreams, I think I am beginning to know that intellectual vitality is the knowledge that the best ideas can come from anywhere.

I’m excited to set up our place together, and to set out from there everyday. Although I would never have thought this possible at graduation, as I write this, it feels like the adventure is just beginning. I can’t wait to hear back from you.
