Glimpse of Trembesi
Samanea saman
Watercolor on paper, august 2026 🌿

August has been a little chaotic and busy with food illustration collaborations, so I decided to take a creative detour and make something for my postcard project, stepping a little outside my usual comfort zone.

A botanical intermezzo.

This is the trembesi tree (Samanea saman), also known as the rain tree. I’ve always had a quiet familiarity with this tree because there used to be one at a corner near my parents’ house.

When I was little, I really wanted to pick its flowers. I was fascinated by their soft, fluffy texture and those tiny fuchsia-pink stamens. But the flowers were always too high for me to reach, so I usually ended up collecting the ones that had already fallen onto the ground instead.

My father also used to tell me that trembesi produces pods that look somewhat like lamtoro, and that they have a naturally sweet taste. He even wondered whether they could potentially be extracted into sugar. I’ve never looked into the scientific literature about this, though—so for now, it remains one of those little childhood stories that stayed with me.

There is another trembesi tree near my university department that holds a different kind of memory. It was one of the places where my classmates and I would gather, chat, and discuss things outdoors. Its wide canopy felt almost like a natural umbrella, giving us a little shelter from the heat of Surabaya.

Interestingly, after deciding to paint the trembesi flower, I started noticing them everywhere around me.

There are actually so many along MERR (Ir. Soekarno), the road I pass by regularly. It made me realize how familiar this tree had become in my everyday landscape without me consciously noticing it. (Continued) by @sofillustory

Glazed Smoked Salmon with Wasabi Mousse
served with Pickled Pink Radish and Daikon Confit

I first came across this dish on Instagram ad from @cityofdreamsmacau back in 2024. I remember thinking, “I’d love to try this someday when I visit China.”

But somehow, that someday hasn’t happened yet. So, instead of waiting, I decided to paint it. Perhaps a little way of turning a food wish into a small manifestation. 🎨✨

Recently, I went back to look for the menu again and found that it had already been reinvented with different details. It made this particular version feel even more special to me — a dish I never got to taste, but had stayed in my mind for years.

And when I was invited to join a fine dining collaboration hosted by @art_neverath , this was the first dish that came to mind. It felt like the perfect opportunity to finally bring this little food wish to life — in my own way. 🧡

Some dishes are meant to be tasted.
Some are meant to be painted first. 💚

Butterfly Pea Mocktail 🍹

Its deep, vibrant color fading into softer shades reminds me of a summer sunset glowing over the beach🌅✨ and with its refreshing look, this mocktail feels like the perfect little escape from the summer heat.

That was what made me want to paint it in watercolor.

After spending the past few months immersing myself in digital illustration, I found myself quietly missing traditional watercolor—the feeling of wet paint flowing across paper, the unpredictability of each layer, and simply letting the colors breathe.

So, I thought this would be the perfect time to return to watercolor and slowly wake up my traditional art muscle memory again. 🎨

A little summer drink, a little nostalgia, and a small reunion with traditional watercolor. 🥂

Free Bingsoo! 🍓❄️

There’s a small Korean-style tent (Pojangmacha) café near my home that we used to visit from time to time. Sadly, they permanently closed on July 20th. So, on July 19th, we decided to visit one last time and enjoy some of their food before they closed. ♡

Luckily, they had a free bingsoo promotion at the time—you could get a bingsoo after spending at least IDR 100,000 on food and drinks. 🍧✨

It was also our first time trying bingsoo! The texture was so unique—like frozen milk shaved into the softest little snowflakes. It was incredibly light, smooth, and melted almost instantly in the mouth.

The fresh strawberries, strawberry sauce, and little caramel biscuit crumbs added such a lovely contrast to the soft, milky shaved ice. And with its pretty presentation, I felt like this little dessert deserved to be more than just a photo in my gallery. So, I decided to turn it into a digital illustration instead. 🎨🍓

And this illustration is also my submission for First Week of Summer Craving 2026, with the theme “Summer Dessert.” ☀️🍧

A Sweet Summer Memory in Fruit 🍓🍉🤍

This piece was originally created for a drawing contest last month with the theme “여름의 추억” (Summer Memories). I didn’t manage to finish it in time for the submission, but I couldn’t bring myself to let the idea disappear completely.

This artwork was inspired by a little summer memory from my mom’s birthday last June — a pink pudding cake topped with fresh strawberries and lychees. I combined that memory with the idea of a watermelon fruit cake I had seen from Savoury Bakery, replacing the green grapes with lychees to bring the cake closer to my own memory. 🎂🍓🤍

So, even though it missed the contest deadline, I decided to finish it and share it anyway. Because some ideas are simply too sweet to go to waste. ♡

A little fruity cake, a little summer, and a sweet memory of Mom. 🌷

어떤 추억은 결코 사라지지 않습니다. 그저 마음속에 오래 간직하는 작은 폴라로이드가 될 뿐입니다.

6월은 저에게 늘 특별한 달입니다. 엄마와 제가 같은 계절에 생일을 맞이하기 때문입니다.

이 작품은 엄마의 생일 과일 케이크에서 영감을 받아 그렸습니다. 저희가 가장 좋아하는 과일 중 하나인 수박으로 다시 표현하며, 함께 나누는 행복을 담아보고 싶었습니다.

무엇보다 이 추억이 더욱 소중한 이유는 지난 몇 년 동안은 저와 동생이 각자의 도시에서 엄마의 생일을 축하해야 했지만, 올해는 드디어 집으로 돌아와 다시 함께할 수 있었기 때문입니다.

멀리서 보내는 선물도 없었고,

영상통화로만 전하는 축하도 없었습니다.

그저 우리 네 가족이 함께였습니다.

아빠, 엄마, 동생, 그리고 저.

돌이켜보니 가장 소중했던 선물은 케이크가 아니었습니다.

같은 시간, 같은 공간에서 함께할 수 있었다는 사실이었습니다.

그래서 이런 추억은 꼭 폴라로이드처럼 간직해야 하는 것 같습니다. 손안에 담을 만큼 작지만, 평생 기억할 만큼 소중하니까요.

A few months ago, my husband took me to Sitara Indian Restaurant for a quiet fine dining date.🥂✨

Among all the dishes we shared, gulab jamun was the one that stayed with me the longest. Soft, sweet, and incredibly comforting.🤩

The sweetness of this dessert isn’t just about its syrup. it reminds me of a quiet evening spent with the right person. Rather than letting that memory fade, I preserved it through digital illustration.🎨

This piece is also part of an upcoming collaboration with some of my incredibly talented artist friends, and I can’t wait to share the full collection with you soon.🤎

Rendering the reflective golden serving bowl was the most challenging part of this illustration. Capturing its reflections and metallic finish pushed me beyond my comfort zone. It took plenty of trial and error, but I’m happy with how it turned out.🥹✨

🌸Blooming like a flower, tasting like home 🌸

Carabikang (also known as kue bikang) is a traditional Javanese market snack known for its beautiful blossom-like shape.

Made from rice flour, coconut milk, and sugar, it has a soft, airy texture with delicate strands and a comforting balance of sweet and savory flavors. As it bakes, the top naturally opens into petal-like layers, creating its signature look.

Simple, nostalgic, and full of charm—this little cake has been bringing smiles to generations, one bloom at a time. 💚✨

Carabikang (atau sering juga disebut kue bikang) adalah jajanan pasar tradisional khas Jawa yang memiliki bentuk unik menyerupai bunga merekah 🌸

Di balik tampilannya yang cantik, kue ini memiliki tekstur berserat yang lembut dengan perpaduan rasa manis dan gurih dari tepung beras, santan, dan gula. Saat matang, bagian atasnya akan mekar menyerupai kelopak bunga, sementara bagian dalamnya tetap empuk dengan rongga-rongga khas yang membuat setiap gigitan terasa begitu nikmat.
