For so long I’ve been uncomfortable with the feeling of being seen. When asked “what do you do?” and I’d answer “I am an artist” — it brought shame. But that shame was never really about the word artist. I have been an artist since I was a child, just as I have been a woman since I was a child. The shame lived in claiming either one out loud — because to name them was to be seen at my core, and my core had already been shaped by judgment, by misconstructs that were never mine to begin with, but that I carried as if they were.

My womb held that shame for the longest time. This shame was rooted in womanhood — in the feeling of not fitting into what society defined a woman to be, to behave like, to look like, to feel.

After much grief and discomfort, I have finally started shedding this shame and transforming it into creation. Nothing brings me closer to my divine woman than making art — it allows me to experience her, every bit of the way.

With this experience, I present to you my studio, and the beginning of my collection: “HER. The Woman Behind the Societal Curtain.” With this collection, I extend an invitation to depict a variety of women — all of whom have the right, the light, and the beauty to define themselves as the divine beings they are.

And to every woman reading this: I invite you toward love, toward grace, toward this journey. I know our society still makes it a difficult one. But I believe, with everything in me, that it has to be walked.

Thank you to each and every divine woman who has crossed my path and blessed me with their soulful light and wisdom.

With love,
Sofiya Kala 🌀

The more I grow into awareness, the more I realize that humans give to their surroundings what they carry within themselves.

For this very reason, the use of words is an art. Words carry a magical power that can brighten or dim the light of those around us, just like a spell.

If you share light, beauty becomes your reality. Leave others’ fears and doubts to them, as they don’t belong to you. Speak from the truth of love, and you will see the world around you change.🌀🌞 taken in Berlin, Germany by @sofiyakala_

Inspired by Carmen Miranda, “The Woman of a Thousand Colours” depicts the many facets of womanhood: joy, freedom, anger, grief, tenderness, and defiance. Like Miranda herself, whose dazzling image often hid a far more complex woman, this portrait celebrates colour as both armour and expression. Each hue holds a different truth, and together they form a woman who refuses to be only one thing.

Painting soon for sale, as part of the collection”HER. The Woman Behind The Societal Curtains.”! 💐✨💌
