We were honored to welcome Governor Kathy Hochul to the South Fork Natural History Museum this past weekend! She was joined by Karen Keough, Secretary to the Governor; Thalia Olaya, Regional Representative; Stevens J. Martinez, Deputy Director of Intergovernmental Affairs for Long Island; and Assemblyman Tommy John Schiavoni. Andy Sabin, Board members Jim Ash, Kimberly Goff, and Ray Iwanowski, and Director of Development Diana Aceti with Frank Quevedo exploring the wonders of the museum.

The Governor brought wonderful energy to her visit—diving right into our T-shirt painting program with the children, exploring our interactive exhibits, and meeting our natural wildlife ambassadors. One highlight was her cradling an NYS endangered eastern-tiger salamander in her hand.

We are deeply grateful to Governor Hochul and her team for celebrating the power of environmental education and hands-on discovery with us. It was a joy to share SOFO’s mission of inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards.

We loved spending this past Saturday in Sag Harbor at HarborFest! Our red fox and live Eastern box turtles attracted many people to our table, where we shared information about the museum. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to chat and learn! by @sofomuseum

One of our MiniPAT tags that popped off a sand tiger shark was found in East Quogue yesterday 🦈 Recovering these tags allows @sofosharks to retrieve a lot more data about the 3D movements of the sharks we’ve tagged, so we’re very excited! by @sofomuseum

We had an awesome time with SOFO Board of Directors President Andy Sabin at our Annual Prehistoric Monster Search this past Saturday!

It was a successful day at the pond; we saw common snapping turtles, painted turtles, and brown bullhead catfish! Thanks to everyone who came out and joined us, and we hope to see you all again at next year's Snapping Turtle Search program 🐢

We had an awesome time out on Stony Brook University's R/V Peconic yesterday on our Marine Biology and Bird Watching Cruise!

We gained first-hand experience with using various devices used by marine biologists, including a YSI probe and a Niskin bottle. We also took a benthic grab sample and trawled two different marine habitats. Participants of all ages sifted through the trawls and identified marine vertebrates and invertebrates. Some species we saw included beautiful striped burrfish, massive clearnose rays, tons of spider crabs, and even an unusual sighting of a great shearwater!
