skylrk oasis, coachella 2026

a 9,000-square-foot installation from justin bieber’s lifestyle brand skylrk, built on the eastern edge of the festival grounds near indio central market. the space is shaded by palm trees and cooled by misting stations, with a ring of video visuals wrapped around the perimeter and custom furniture throughout for fans to sit and regroup between sets.

the seating (30 large-format benches) was 3D printed by decibel and caracol, split across two production sites (new jersey and texas) and completed in two weeks. skylrk was co-founded by bieber and neima khaila in 2025, initially as a footwear project before expanding into tech and lifestyle goods.

“As Seen Below—The Dome, a Skyspace” (2025)
ARoS Aarhus Art Museum, Denmark

At 130 feet across, the dome comes close to matching the Pantheon in Rome, which spans just over 140 feet. It’s the largest Skyspace Turrell has built for a museum, and marks his 100th Skyspace, in a series he’s built across 26 countries since the mid-1970s.

Visitors enter through an underground corridor before arriving in the domed chamber, where a central oculus opens to the sky above. The piece runs in different modes throughout the day: open to shifting weather and daylight during regular hours, sealed into a fully interior space where color washes across the walls, and separate sunrise and sunset sessions where the lighting is timed precisely to the changing sky outside. In Aarhus’s Nordic summers, those sessions can start as early as 4:30am or run past 10:30pm.

ARoS director Rebecca Matthews has called it “an extraordinary work that invites visitors to slow down, lift their gaze, and experience light, time, and space in deeply moving ways.” Turrell, now 83, has described his intent more simply: he’s less interested in showing people an image than in making them aware of the act of looking itself.

The dome also completes ARoS’s multi-year expansion, developed with Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects, and sits near Olafur Eliasson’s “Your rainbow panorama” on the museum’s rooftop, putting two major light artists’ work within view of each other.

“LULL”

Vincent Houzé, Stephen Baker & David Bianciardi (AV&C)
Day for Night Festival, Houston, TX in 2015

Housed in a dark, roughly 6,000-square-foot warehouse, the piece takes the form of a large triangular scrim structure lit from within by “waves of liquid light,” as AV&C describes it.

The animation isn’t hand-keyframed; it’s generated by simple underlying rules that let the visuals evolve on their own, producing patterns AV&C calls “organic” and “abstracted,” with behavior that “teeters between order and chaos.”

The concept centers on the fuzzy boundary between being awake and asleep, described by the artists as “the liminal state between conscious and unconscious.” Fog thickens the air around the structure, and a slow, echoing soundtrack rises and falls with the light, so walking through feels less like viewing an artwork and more like drifting through it.

“Lull” marked the first collaboration between AV&C (Stephen Baker, David Bianciardi) and generative artist Vincent Houzé, who’s since described his broader practice as using simple rules to generate complexity and lifelike motion. The duo returned the following year with “phases,” a related installation using robotic mirror arrays instead of projected fabric.

Infrarouge, the alias of French artist Anthony Tournadre, creates his works by finding a brilliant blend of photography, AI, and the subconscious mind, after spending nearly ten years in the polished, sterile world of advertising.

There’s a tension between control and decay in his work. AI is usually used to make things more seamless, more convincing, more “real.” He seems to be using it backwards, in a rare inversion: pushing toward glitch & asymmetry. The results feel closer to a fever dream or an intrusive memory than a polished image that pre-prescribes an easily digested emotion.

You could think of it as anti-advertising: someone who spent a decade making images meant to sell desire, now making images that refuse to resolve into anything sellable or comfortable.

His work raises the question of whether AI-generated imagery can hold ambiguity the way analog photography’s grain, blur, or accident always could, and whether “brutalism” here is a way of reintroducing imperfection into a medium that defaults to smoothness.

His work has been shown at the European Month of Photography in Berlin and appeared in Antidote Magazine.

ANDREAS LUTZ
Abstract Language Model (Sync)
Trained artificial neural network, custom software

An artificial neural network was trained on the entire Unicode character set: more than 65,000 characters spanning every known human writing system. The model creates “latent points” for each character, and interpolating between them generates entirely new symbols that never existed in any language, blurring every alphabet into one continuous system of signs.

Technically, Lutz trained the models using VAEs (variational autoencoders) via Python, then piped the resulting visual states into TouchDesigner through SharedMem, syncing everything live with Ableton Live and ArtNet/DMX for lighting.

Andreas Lutz is a Berlin-based sound and digital artist whose work explores machine perception, semiotics, and alternative human-machine communication systems.

Exhibited at @unsingeenhiver21
Dijon, France, Sept 4–Oct 5, 2024
