Two months out from releasing motherfountain.error=mtn and I am still wrapping my head around what this song carries.

Writing it was my way of sitting with the gravity and terror of happened, and my immense gratitude for what didn’t.

Since then, this song has left my little world and found its way into other people’s lives. Hearing that it has helped some folks feel less alone in their own aftermaths is the highest compliment I can imagine.

If you have a moment today, I’d be honored if you’d sit a spell with this one.

CW: Flashing Lights, Trauma

Two years since Helene. One year since motherfountain.error=mtn came into the world.  motherfountain started as something I was carrying while I was out volunteering in Marshall after the flood. It became a song about my friend Colston @drugstm_ , who survived a landslide that took his house during Helene. I recorded its earliest version for The Resonance Sessions album, accompanied by @beccaleighmusic , @eclaywhite , @dulsisings , and @alysebaca .

Then the song was reborn as motherfountain.error=mtn when @parkway.studios filmed me performing it for @songsofthestormfilm . The take that ended up on the final recording is the same one captured live, in a single take, for that film, with Colston in the room.

Also, quietly, motherfountain.error=mtn was featured in the New York Times last year, on the day it was released. Still doesn’t feel real to type that.

Join us for an outdoor screening of @songsofthestormfilm at the beautiful @drip_sauna!

On October 1, we will come together surrounding two-year anniversary of Hurricane Helene to honor the art that is made in these sacred mountains and all we continue to grieve collectively.

The screening will open with a short guided mediation by @whereolcarol and be followed by a q+a with the filmmakers. Bring your camp chairs or blankets to be cozy during the film!

After the film, we will sauna, cold plunge and sit by the fire, while we listen to the Resonance Sessions album.

The hope is for this evening to be a grounding, cathartic community experience for everyone to connect on this very special land.

I like sharing my art, but I don’t always love sharing my likeness, especially on social media. I do it when it supports something I care about, but even then, body dysmorphia has been a major obstacle for me.

Over the last year I’ve maintained a practice of drawing and painting faces. Mostly they look nothing like me, but often they look more like how I feel. They often have exaggerated “acromegaloid” features e.g. prominent brow, underbite, enlarged jaw/nose. Some people see them and assume they’re supposed to be zombies, but they’re not. They’re more like my little ‘megaly buddies.

I’ve still never met another person with acromegaly in the wild (except at an acromegaly conference a few years back, but I’m not sure that counts) but I reckon this way, I get to meet one each time I sit down to draw or paint, and that has been a small comfort.

📣 Golden Folk returns to the Grey Eagle this Wednesday, August 19th!

It's been tough to find the right words to talk about our event last month to support @soft.talk.only. We were able to raise around $2500 to support our friend Doug as he navigates the financial reality of living with a rare disease. It's a huge honor to be able to give back to the community that supports us in turn, and we don't take it for granted. Doug is a treasure of the WNC musical community and a true genius. Tune into what he's doing and take it in.

We got to witness one of the most magical and tender nights the Golden Folk stage has ever seen, tenderly co-curated with Doug. Maisy and Lucky Break started it off strong with their tender folk/pop tunes, then Lyle and Anabel floored us with their tight interweaved harmonies. Dulci brought a large dose of Rafflemania energy to help us hustle for Doug (and thanks to Luke @outtherestudioswnc for the generous raffle prize), then Becca and Dulci brought down the house with their powerful song in the round. Finally, Mother Marrow and Doug's sets featured a rotating cast of loved ones and some of the most inventive instrumentation to have ever graced our stage (bowed glockenspiel, kazoo, shruti box, and a custom music box...wow!). If you were there in the room with us, you know what we mean when we say that the energy in the room that night was unlike anything we've witnessed before.

We are back at it this coming Wednesday with a lineup chock-full of rippers. This might be our best lineup yet... we've got old locals, new locals, and a large dose of incredible new and old friends from out of town with a wide variety of musical stylings. Trust us, you don't want to miss it.

Gearing up for @avlsoundsfest next Saturday. This will be my first show with the full rig in over a year and I’m pretty chuffed about it 🥳 I’ll be playing my unreleased album in its entirety for the first time, so if you’re itching for a sneak peak of that, this is your chance!

When @claywhite first reached out about planning a @goldenfolk.avl benefit show for me, it took some convincing. I’ve had mixed feelings about sharing my health struggles publicly, especially alongside my music.

When you’re diagnosed with a lifelong illness, people often say “don’t let it define you.” I heard that a lot, but no one really explains why it matters. I had to learn that the hard way.

Illness, pain, and mortality are uncomfortable for a lot of people, and because they’ve dominated my day-to-day for so long, it became harder to relate to people (especially my peers in music). One day I realized I’d done the thing everyone warns you not to do: I’d let my disease define me, and it’s taken a lot of work to undo that.

Yesterday I told my therapist I was having a hard time fully receiving the love and support my community poured out this week at @goldenfolk.avl Between the gratitude and performing at the event, I got a little preoccupied managing it all. I spent the rest of the session meditating on the whole experience, absorbing that support somatically.

My heart is full again, and I have a lot to express. Thank you for showing up for me, and for seeing me as I am.

I want to express my love and gratitude to:

@eclaywhite for being the absolute best, for planning this whole thing, and for being such a powerful connector in this community

@goldenretreater for being such a homie, and for adding a sick raffle item to the mix

@mothermarrow for the love and care with which they’ve held my songs, for inviting me into theirs, and for the magic we’ve woven into this music together
