Women have marched through dark streets, raised their voices, demanded accountability, and returned home wondering whether any of it was heard. Perhaps we can no longer wait for those who choose not to listen. This year, from woman to woman, I wish for something different for us in this season of Shakti. Let the awakening begin with us.

We are raised to revere the Divine Feminine, yet socialised to suppress her within ourselves. You don’t build altars to a storm and expect women to stay quiet. See you on a higher frequency. 🪷

You cannot worship the Divine Feminine and expect women to remain small. This Navratri, may Shakti rise beyond temples, rituals and nine days of devotion.

Delhi protests. Women’s safety. Headlines that fade, promises that repeat. Perhaps India’s deepest crisis isn’t just institutional. It’s a crisis of collective consciousness.

शुभ नवरात्रि। जय जगदम्बा।🌺 We worship Durga. We invoke Shakti. We celebrate the Divine Feminine.

Yet outside our temples, women are still fighting for the freedom to walk, speak, dress and exist without fear.

What does it say about our collective consciousness when we worship goddesses but struggle to honour the women among us?

This Navratri, may devotion extend beyond the altar. 🌺

I was in eighth grade when my grandfather handed me a copy of George Orwell’s Animal Farm.

I didn’t particularly like it.

I remember thinking it was a rather cynical way of looking at society. Surely, people weren’t that easily fooled? Surely, power couldn’t corrupt everything it touched? I was fourteen, perhaps a little too hopeful about the world, and Orwell seemed unnecessarily pessimistic.

I read it, shelved it, and forgot about it.

Funny how life comes full circle.

I went on to study politics, and eventually found myself working with communications, narratives, and the peculiar business of how people come to believe what they believe.

And somewhere between studying political theory and watching the world unfold, I began to understand the book I had so casually dismissed.

We live in an age where everyone has something to say, very few have anything to question, and the truth seems to depend increasingly on who’s telling it. We have become rather good at dressing up contradictions as convictions, propaganda as public opinion, and power as public service.

Orwell would have had a field day. Although I suspect even he might have struggled to keep up with our news cycle.

I don’t think I’ve ever felt closer to his writing than I do today. And it’s a rather uncomfortable feeling, realising that the world you once thought too absurd to exist has become the one you wake up to every morning.

I wonder what my grandfather saw in that book when he gave it to me.

Perhaps some books are handed to us long before we’re ready to understand them.

I thought Animal Farm was a little too cynical at fourteen. At twenty-five, I’m beginning to wonder whether it wa A photograph of George Orwell’s Animal Farm, held against a muted teal-blue sky. The post reflects on Orwell’s political satire, freedom of expression, propaganda, censorship, authoritarianism, and the right to dissent. It draws parallels between the novel’s exploration of power and contemporary political discourse in India, including democracy, electoral accountability, student activism, women’s protests, and the importance of questioning authority. A reflection on how classic literature continues to resonate with modern society. by @softpolymath

Patriarchy survives on bent backs. Grow a spine

“So how do we fix it? The short answer is that we don’t. We have wasted decades telling women and girls how to fix things. How to fix themselves. How to stay safe. It hasn’t worked. Because women were never the problem in the first place”.
-Laura Bates, Fix the System, Not the Women

“They demand obedience because they are terrified of autonomy. A mind trapped in a primitive loop cannot coexist with a woman who owns her own gravity.”

Women are not asking for permission to exist freely anymore.

Every woman who steps into the street, raises her voice, refuses to shrink, walks home after dark, speaks when she was taught to stay quiet is widening the world for another woman.

Maybe freedom does not arrive all at once.

Maybe it arrives woman by woman, spine by spine, voice by voice.

Until one day, fear is no longer the inheritance.

“Rape is not a sexual act; it is not the result of a sudden, uncontrollable attraction to a woman in a skimpy dress. It is an act of power and violence. To suggest otherwise is deeply insulting to the vast majority of men, who are perfectly able to control their sexual desires”.
-Laura Bates, Everyday Sexism

As a woman, hypervigilance starts to feel less like a response and more like a condition of existing. You learn to scan the street, hold your keys differently, share your location, calculate the route home, notice who is behind you, notice who is too close, notice when the road gets darker. Your nervous system learns the world before you are ever allowed to move through it freely.

And that is the part men may never fully understand. The exhaustion of never being able to simply exist without assessment, calculation, contingency. The exhaustion of knowing that freedom is technically yours, but safety is still something you have to negotiate every single day.

Growing up, I hated pink, and it was never really about the colour. It was about the assumption behind it: that because I was a girl, I would obviously like pink. Somewhere along the way, I started rejecting the colour along with everything I thought it represented. A lot of that came from internalized misogyny, from wanting to distance myself from anything considered too girly so I could be taken more seriously. So I became a blue person. My wardrobe turned blue, black, grey and white, and for years I barely wore pink at all.

Then I turned 25, and somehow I wanted pink again. Not because it had been assigned to me, but because I chose it. Maybe that is why “pink is the new black” feels different now. Less like a trend, more like reclamation. A return to softness and femininity without believing it makes you less intelligent, ambitious or capable. A couple of years ago, I stopped for the most beautiful cotton-candy sky, and this year, on my birthday, the universe somehow gave me another one, soft pink melting into blue. Maybe the universe knows about my lifelong obsession with skies. Or maybe I was simply paying attention. Either way, this Virgo season was pink

Story time from your resident Substack girly 📢📢. I used to cry on almost every birthday. I was either sick, buried in exams, or it felt like everyone was too busy to remember. Even my 23rd birthday in the UK came with a dissertation deadline. But my friends in Liverpool gave me a surprise before it, and somehow that became one of the first good birthday memories my brain held onto. I finished my dissertation a day early, then spent my actual birthday alone at the docks with coffee, pizza, music, and absolutely nowhere else to be.

Growing up, birthdays often felt more like what people thought I should want than what I actually wanted. This year, 25 came with its own pressure too. Desi girl by @softpolymath

I remember marching after Nirbhaya.
I remember protesting after Hathras.
I remember being a Gargi student in 2020, when men barged into our college fest and women were harassed on our own campus. I remember standing there again, protesting.

I was a child when this cycle became familiar to me. I am an adult woman now, and somehow we are still here.

Different year. Different woman. Different headline.
The same fear. The same instructions.
Come home earlier. Be careful. Change your route. Call when you reach.

From girlhood to womanhood, I have watched women inherit a hyper-vigilant nervous system just to exist in public. No woman should have to live like this. No woman should have to negotiate with fear just to move through her own city.

It is crass that even in this century, women still have to fight for the basics: safety, freedom, dignity, and the right to exist in public without fear.

This loop has gone on long enough. It ends with us. Right here.

TW: SA, rape culture, GBV

A society that treats rape as inevitable has already decided whose freedom is expendable.

Rape culture begins long before the crime. It begins in every joke excused, every boundary dismissed, every victim blamed, and every freedom taken from women in the name of safety.

Women should not have to shrink their lives because society refuses to confront violence. Safety should mean freedom, dignity, accountability, and the right to exist in public without constantly calculating risk.

TW: Sexual violence

DU has some of the most competitive colleges in the country. LSR is one of them.

Imagine working for years to make the cut, finally earning your seat, and then being told to take your education online because the system failed to make the street outside your college safe.

She did everything right.

She studied. She earned her place. She showed up.

And still, she is the one asked to disappear.

That is what patriarchal entitlement does: men claim public space, women are taught to adjust around the threat.

A man commits the violence.
A woman loses the street.
A student loses the classroom.

That is not protection.

That is a system shifting the cost of its failure onto women.

We crack UPSC, one of the hardest exams on Earth, but can’t build a system that convicts a rapist in under a decade.

We send rockets to the moon and build world class infrastructure, yet our bureaucrats’ ultimate policy innovation for sexual violence is locking park gates at 6 PM.

With a 27% conviction rate, 73 out of 100 perpetrators walk free. It is cheaper for authorities to cage half the population than to do their job, fix streetlights, and enforce real deterrence.

We don’t have a safety problem.

We have a crisis of institutional conscience.

In a society in which misogyny and violence against women are so widespread and so normalized, it is difficult for us to consider these things “extreme” or “radical,” because they are simply not out of the ordinary. We do not leap to tackle a terrorist threat to women, because the reality of women being terrorized, violated, and murdered by men is already part of the wallpaper.
~Laura Bates, Men Who Hate Women: From Incels to Pickup Artists: The Truth about Extreme Misogyny and How it Affects Us All

★★★★★ 10,000% worth reading.

This book is very close to my heart because my friends bought it for me for my birthday while I was writing my dissertation on manosphere propaganda, so I came to it for all the right and wrong reasons.

It unpacks incels, the manosphere, misogyny, radicalisation and the ways hatred towards women gets normalised until we barely recognise it for what it is.

For my girlies, male allies and anyone who calls themselves a feminist: please read this one. Not saying it’s not triggering, disturbing or depressing but still worth the read .

This book is very close to my heart because my friends bought it for me for my birthday while I was writing my dissertation on manosphere propaganda, so I came to it for all the right and wrong reasons.

Men Who Hate Women takes you inside the world of incels and the wider manosphere, but more importantly, it shows how misogyny doesn’t stay confined to some dark corner of the internet. It seeps into language, entitlement, harassment, victim-blaming, violence, and all the little things women are taught to brush off as “normal.”

Reading it as a woman is uncomfortable because so much of it doesn’t feel unfamiliar.

And this week, watching women and students take to the streets in Delhi again, demanding something as basic as the right to exist safely in public spaces, it feels particularly difficult to look away. (The Indian Express)

For my girlies, male allies, feminist folks, and honestly anyone trying to understand how misogyny becomes a culture rather than just an individual attitude: read this one.

AI wasn’t built on some magical cloud. It was built on us. 📚

Real books, journalism, art, code and decades of human knowledge became training material for modern AI systems. And yes, this part is real: tons of physical books were purchased, had their bindings cut off, were scanned into digital datasets and the paper copies discarded.

Books have always been political.

Throughout history, those in power have tried to control what people can read because controlling access to knowledge can shape what societies remember, question and imagine.

AI companies are not destroying books to censor their ideas. But what is happening raises a different question about power over knowledge: who gets to copy it, preserve it, train on it and profit from it?

Writers and publishers have already taken AI companies to court over copyrighted books and allegedly pirated copies used in training libraries.

So the AI conversation isn’t only about privacy.

It is about consent, copyright, ownership, preservation and a much older question:

Who gets to control and profit from human knowledge?

Maybe before we obsess over building the next data centre, we should protect the original ones too.

AI can imitate almost everything except the fact that you were here.

It can learn the shape of grief, longing, love, memory. But it cannot know what your mother’s voice sounds like when you’re half asleep. It cannot miss a version of yourself you used to be. It cannot understand why one song, one scene, one sentence can undo you on the wrong day and put you back together on the right one.

So if AI ever makes you feel replaceable, remember this: meaning was never just about knowing more. It came from having lived.

Save this for the days AI anxiety gets loud. You are still allowed to make things slowly, imperfectly, personally, because you were here.

Going Down the Rabbit Hole, Pt. 4 🐇

I work in strategic communications and I’ve spent enough time training and evaluating AI systems to know that the story around a technology can become almost as powerful as the technology itself.

And I say that as someone who uses AI, understands it, and still occasionally reads one dramatic headline and thinks, well. lovely. civilisation had a good run.

So this page is not going to be a countdown to the robot apocalypse. I’d rather look at the quieter questions. Who benefits from the way the future is being described? What are we slowly handing over without noticing? And where should humans probably keep a hand on the wheel?

Because understanding something is far more useful than being terrified of it.

If AI makes you anxious too, send this to the friend who has already mentally prepared for 2047. We could all use a little more literacy and a little less doomscrolling.
