How are birds in India faring? A short film on the State of India's Birds report 2023.

- The report uses 30 million observations uploaded to eBird from 30,000 birdwatchers to come up with measures of distribution range, and trends in abundance. Using this, it assesses the conservation priority for 942 Indian birds species.
- It also explores details of the trends for individual species as well as species groups, based on habitat, diet, migration habits, and so on.
- There is a chapter containing case studies of systematic monitoring in different parts of India.
- A chapter on threats to birds in India reviews some major factors of concern.
- A final chapter contains implications from the results presented, and recommendations for species conservation, habitat conservation, research, and law & policy.

New research shows that more than half of Earth's migratory bird species are declining. But while many migratory bird species are declining, advances in satellite tracking, AI, genetics, long-term monitoring, and citizen science are transforming our ability to understand these declines and conserve birds across their full annual cycles.

The science is also clear: conservation works when we identify threats early, incorporate policies and partnerships across borders, and take action before species become endangered.

Seabirds are vital to marine ecosystems, acting as ecological engineers and "connectors" between ocean and terrestrial environments.

Birdlife International lists 17 types of seabirds, which includes Pelagic birds like Albatrosses, Petrels, Shearwaters and also Gulls and Terns . A third of these species are globally threatened. Common threats for seabirds include plastic pollution, oil spills, over fishing, depletion of prey and climate change.

Pelagic Birds are a knowledge gap in SoIB. Trends for Pelagic Seabirds aren’t available on SoIB due to limited citizen science data for these species.

Considering that Indian Ocean may be essential for many seabirds, studying these species, estivation their trends and understanding them is important for conservation of these species.

On this year's World Endangered Species Day, let us look at species which are classified as Critically Endangered or Endangered, and also with very restricted geographical range (< 7,500 sq. km).

The Nilgiri Laughingthrush and Banasura Laughingthrush are restricted to sky islands in the Western Ghats.
Bengal Florican is restricted to the Himalayan Terai and grasslands of northeastern India.
The Bugun Liochicla is restricted to very small pockets in Arunachal Pradesh, at altitudes of over 2000 m.
The Swamp Grass Babbler is found in plains of Brahmaputra, Cachar district in Assam, with a few sightings from Northern Bangladesh.
The Endangered White-winged Wood Duck, the state bird of Assam, is restricted to undisturbed forest pools in northeast India and some countries of Southeast Asia.
Baer's Pochard - Very few individuals migrate to India now from northeast Asia, and they are restricted to wetlands of Assam and Manipur.
The White-bellied Heron is categorised as High Priority by virtue of their range within India being Very Restricted.

The small range sizes highlight the need for more monitoring that is needed to understand the trends of these species.

Hope for White-bellied Heron conservation:
Stakeholders of conservation of this critically endangered species, gathered together to give hope to the species' future at the White-Bellied Heron workshop held at Cotton University, Guwahati, this week. This was particularly focused on the NE Arunachal population of the heron. @arunforests @cerosncf

White-bellied Heron is classified as Critically Endangered, by IUCN. Scroll to the last slide for the SoIB species card for this species. Long term and annual trends aren't available for this species because of insufficient data. However, because of small population and very restricted distribution range, SoIB classifies this species as species of High Conservation Priority.

The recently published interim report (2026) of the State of the World's Migratory Species highlights the concerns faced by migrated birds. Several species are facing rapid declines worldwide, across multiple migratory pathways.
This is in line with results from the State of India's birds 2023 resort as well. Addressing this concern requires concerted efforts from governments and organisations across the globe. Continuous monitoring, protecting coastal habitats and mitigating the threats faced by these birds have been recommended to protect these migratory birds.

Today is #WorldSparrowDay.
What does SoIB say about House Sparrows?

As per the SoIB 2023 report, the overall current annual trend shows a decline.

A chapter on House Sparrows in the SoIB 2020 indicated that while the population was stable overall, there was a drop in urban areas.

And, to answer one of the most common questions regarding sparrows - no, there's no evidence to support the concern that radiation from mobile phone towers are affecting sparrow populations!
