Endured a lot of bs for this B.S. 👩🏾‍🔬🎓

As I take some time to reflect during my final moments at 21, I would like to take the opportunity to share one of my greatest achievements to date.

On Sunday, May 18th, 2025, I graduated with my Bachelor of Science from Tufts University in Chemical Engineering. At the institution, I simultaneously pursued two minors in general chemistry and music engineering, so it’s safe to say that I’ve been quite busy over the past four years.

The sheer level of grit, tenacity, and determination required to bring any dream to fruition is astounding, and pursuing this degree proved to be no different. I’d be blatantly lying if I said it was easy, but in cracks that are created in great adversity, great strength has a chance to shine through. And when that strength radiates from your community, that light embraces you like the gentle rays of the sun.

To friends and loved ones who’ve prayed for my success, aided me through moments of great peril, and allowed me to relish in the joys of friendship, I am grateful to you. To professors and mentors who served as a grounding force in the hurricane of chaos that was undergrad. For believing in my vision and my competency even when I didn’t believe in myself, I am grateful to you. To Kalembwe and Jordan, my fellow Peas in the Pod. Thank you for carrying me on your shoulders and trusting me to do the same. I am grateful to you both. Man, God works in mysterious ways. As Phil. 4:13 promises us the strength to do all things through Christ, little did I know the strength would come from the extensive community I built along the way. I am incredibly indebted to each and every one of you all.

As I close this open letter of gratitude, I’ll leave you with some fun statistics: There are about 4% of engineers that are Black, and Black women make up less than 2% of the engineering work force in the United States. Despite the horrors and lack of representation in the industry, I am incredibly honored to join the rankings, right at the ripe age of 21.

Passionately, with gratitude,
Ella S. Boateng :)
