Maladies
by James Hartunian

October 1-31
First Thursday Reception, October 1, 2026, 5-8pm
Gallery Hours: Friday - Sunday, 12-5pm

Maladies, a solo exhibition by James Hartunian, is centered on the language we use to talk about our bodies. He wonders about the strangeness and absurdity of having a body, and the visceral reactions our body autonomously creates in response to emotions and stimuli.
James Hartunian is a queer interdisciplinary artist based in Seattle, WA. He constructs electronic environments and objects to stimulate and simulate future worlds, future bodies, and future landscapes. He has exhibited domestically in Louisville, Kentucky; Columbus and Findlay, Ohio; Chicago, Illinois; Portland, Oregon; and Seattle, Washington. He has shown work internationally at Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria (2020) and Tlaxcala3 in Mexico City, Mexico (2025). James is also a member of SOIL artist collective, a nonprofit gallery established, supported, and managed by Seattle artists. He received a BS in Biochemistry from the University of Michigan (2019) and an MFA from Ohio State University (2023).

Today is the last day of 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦, my solo show in the backspace of Soil. What generous conversations and documentation I received of this show from my community, and people. I have been working on my art nonstop since the beginning of the year. It’s been extremely challenging and taxing and rewarding. A massive thank you to everyone who came by my side to support me in many ways as I worked on this massive body of work.

First 12 slides by @ryanwarnerphotography
The last few are just a few snapshots of important visitors ❤️ and one behind the scenes. Wish I had documentation of me getting the staircase up…by myself 💀🪜🪜

It’s time for me to pivot to working on writing for a project that’s a long-time coming. And job seeking…would love to teach more at this time as I am loving this after school program I have been teaching for elementary schoolers…but perhaps there is a opportunity to engage with some more matured minds? Looking forward to what’s next. by @soilart

✨ DEADLINE EXTENDED !! Due now October 2nd at 11:59PM✨

CALL FOR NEW SOIL MEMBERS 2026✨
Link in bio!

Do you love being part of a collective with brilliant artists who continually inspire and inform your own practice? Love cultivating a supportive art community in Seattle? Like producing experimental shows that wouldn’t happen in a traditional gallery? What about meeting other artists and collectives from around the world? If this sounds like you then you are encouraged to apply for our call for new members.

What is SOIL you ask? Founded in 1995, SOIL is a collective and a nonprofit gallery established, supported, and managed by local artists. SOIL exists as an experimental venue for artists and curators to exhibit, develop, and advance innovative art of diverse media and content.

Note: We have a great time, thrive on art shows, and do a lot of fun things together like have parties and do studio visits; we ~also~ get down to BIZ and have bi-weekly meetings that talk about things like budgets and logistics, so if you’re an artist who also happens to be good at (or enjoys!) things such as: grant writing, official email correspondence, designing calls and flyers, knowing general technology stuff, whipping up spreadsheets, doing Google Drive business, or have any other Professional Adult skills that could help SOIL hum even hummier, then you are especially required to apply. We love artists, we love people who are very good at hard things, and we extra love artists who are very good at helpful non art things.

Join us! ❤️

Interchange
by Julia Monté

September 3-26
First Thursday Reception, September 3, 2026, 5-8pm
Gallery Hours: Friday - Sunday,12PM - 5pm

SOIL Member Julia Monté grew up in the metroplex of Dallas, Texas, which was burgeoning and expanding greatly in the early and mid 2000s. The stilted highway overpasses and seemingly infinite mess of scaffolds in the rapidly developing city were highly enchanting to her – the structures all butting up against each other and directing mass communal experiences. This enchantment turned precarious as she began to examine the underlying complexity of these systems that guide everyday life. Repurposing material, she constructs entropic sculptures in response to these structures; their importance, invasiveness, and penetrable futures.

For her debut solo show in the backspace of SOIL Gallery, SOIL member Julia Monté brings a collection of works for Interchange, an exhibition that embraces the modular and reclaimed nature of her work.

September 3-26
First Thursday Reception, September 3, 2026, 5-8pm
Gallery Hours: Friday - Sunday,12PM - 5pm

Shape|Shift is a group exhibition featuring works by Jordan Hogan, Zoe Potter, Stella Bronson, and Cloe Short. The exhibition interrogates distortion, femininity, and the unspoken, through materiality. The artists contrast the industrial with the feminine through their use of materials in order to emphasize the history and context in which they’re used. This creates space for the artists to scrutinize the perception of femininity as it has been modernly constructed.

OOSH
By Forrest Perrine

August 6 – August 29, 2026
First Thursday Opening Reception, August 6, 2026, 6-9pm
Gallery Hours: Friday - Sunday,12PM - 5pm

This August at SOIL, Forrest Perrine will present OOSH, a new line of furniture and furniture-adjacent objects. Each piece is handmade and one of a kind.

He believes the spaces you live in should be beautiful and interesting, as much (if not more) form as they are function. While most furniture objects in the world from are designed for mass production and machine perfection, OOSH embraces the creative singularity and imperfection of the maker’s hand. In short, it’s more interested in art than it is “fine woodworking.” Do you need to use a giant flower to rest your coffee cup on? Do you need a pretend Greek column to put your bedside lamp on? A tiny shrine for favorite tiny object? Absolutely not. But obviously yes.
