The Silent Singer

Hidden in the shadows of the forest, a White-rumped Shama pauses beside a still pool. For a fleeting moment, the water mirrors its beauty, creating a scene where reality and reflection become one.

While many know the Shama for its melodious song, it’s moments like these—quiet, graceful, and unhurried—that reveal its true elegance. No performance, no audience, just a brief conversation between a bird and its reflection.

In nature, the most beautiful stories are often the ones whispered, not sung.

Not every flamingo arrives painted in shades of pink. This young traveler, still dressed in soft browns and whites, carries the promise of colors yet to come. Watching it quietly forage through the gentle ripples was a reminder that nature’s beauty isn’t always loud—it often reveals itself in subtle details and fleeting moments.

Every feather tells a story. Every migration leaves a trace. And every encounter deepens our appreciation for the wild.

A mirrored moment in the wetlands. 🦩🦩

Two young flamingos, still dressed in their subtle juvenile plumage, move in perfect harmony as they sift through the waters of Hoskote. While they haven’t yet earned the iconic pink hues of adulthood, their quiet elegance is a reminder that every journey has its own season.

Patience, persistence, and a little luck came together to witness this fleeting interaction — a glimpse into the lives of these remarkable migratory visitors.

Nature rarely repeats a moment. That’s what makes it worth waiting for.

Flamingos, Hoskote Lake
Nikon Z50ii, Nikkor 200 - 500 mm

Saturday evening homework for our weekend photography session led to an unexpected surprise — five semi-adult flamingos had been reported at Hoskote. Knowing how rare this sighting was and with flamingos being a lifer for me, the excitement was instant.

Before dawn, I set out on the 40+ km drive, carrying equal parts hope and anticipation. As the first golden rays of sunlight touched the wetland, a beautiful sight unfolded before me. There they were — elegant, graceful, and surprisingly calm, wading through the shimmering waters.

Watching these magnificent travellers pause on their migration journey felt surreal. The soft morning light, gentle reflections, and the quiet rhythm of the wetland created one of those moments that every nature photographer dreams of experiencing.

Sometimes, all it takes is an early morning, a little faith, and a long drive to witness something truly special.

Sharing a few frames and videos from a memorable lifer encounter. šŸ¦©āœØšŸ“ø

After nearly two years of planning and waiting, I finally managed to capture these shots of the Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher (ODKF). These birds return to the Tahmini Ghats each year around June to nest, so timing and preparation really mattered.

I arrived on site at about 6:30 am and, after a short while, met another photographer. We started chatting and I used the opportunity to understand the bird’s typical visit time and behaviour pattern. From that conversation, I learned that a pair of ODKFs usually comes to this particular spot to bathe in the water. The usual routine is three to four quick dips, and then they disappear back into the forest.

Based on that, I settled in and waited. By 8:30 am, there was still no sign of them. I kept at it, but even by 10:30 am I hadn’t seen anything, and I was close to calling it a day. The other photographer, though, was confident they’d show up—he explained that because they were in the middle of nesting, they’d still need to come to the water to bathe.

That reassurance helped me stay patient and stick with the plan. And in the end, it paid off: at around 11:00 am, the kingfisher finally arrived. Seeing them up close was genuinely impressive—the colours were incredibly vibrant, and the whole moment felt like a real reward for the time and effort invested. It was also a personal milestone for me, as it was my first-ever sighting of the species (a ā€œliferā€).
