What is Overlanding?

It's not about how far you drive. It's about how deeply you experience the journey. Choosing the road that isn't on most people's itinerary. Waking up to mountain sunrises instead of alarm clocks. Crossing borders, discovering places few ever see, and collecting stories instead of souvenirs.

Overlanding isn't about escaping life. It's about living it.

Because one day becomes someday. And someday can become never.

Some dreams deserve more than "one day." Your next great story starts here. The road is waiting.

At Solace Overland, we don't measure a journey by the number of countries you've driven through. We measure it by the memories you bring home.

Anyone can tick countries off a map. We believe in slowing down, leaving the highway behind, and discovering the places that most travellers never see.

Don't just drive through a country. Experience it.

《万重山》 | Beyond Every Mountain | An Original Song

There comes a point in life when you look into the rear-view mirror and realise you're no longer chasing the person you wanted to become.

You're looking at the person you've become.

This song was born somewhere along my overland journey—between empty highways, mountain passes, lonely service stations at 4 a.m., endless sunrises, and thousands of kilometres behind the wheel.

It's inspired by my drive from Singapore into the heart of Asia, and by the moments that no camera can truly capture—the silence, the uncertainty, the freedom, and the quiet conversations with the younger version of myself.

It's about the roads we choose.
The people we leave behind.
The dreams that refuse to die.
And the mountains we don't realise we've already crossed.

Some roads are easier with company.
Some roads... are meant to be travelled alone.

🎧 This is an original song that I wrote, inspired by my expedition. The vocals are not performed by me, but every lyric comes from my own journey and experiences on the road.

For the best experience, listen with headphones, earphones, or a good speaker. The music was written to make you feel like you're sitting behind the wheel, driving into another sunrise.

The title 《万重山》 literally means "Beyond Every Mountain." Copyright ©️ 2026

> 回头已是万重山,后视镜里少年远。
Looking back, countless mountains now lie behind me. In the rear-view mirror, the young man I once was grows farther away.

If you're wondering what the Chinese lyrics mean, send me a DM. I'd be happy to share the full English translation and the story behind each verse.

No matter how many mountains are behind us...

We keep moving forward.

Day 31 in China | Day 41 from Singapore

Solace Overland - Gansu, No Man's Land. (Silk Road - Hexi Corridor)
I think life slowly teaches us something.

We spend so much of it running.
Chasing goals. Chasing money. Chasing the next thing.

Always moving.
Always planning.
Always thinking about tomorrow.

Then suddenly I found myself here.

And maybe in this video, you can feel it too.

The emptiness.
The quietness of a place untouched by noise.

Funny thing is… I used to think silence meant loneliness.

Now I’m starting to think silence might actually be where we find ourselves again.

Maybe this is what solace really is.
Just that rare moment where life stops asking anything from you.

The Good Times. Overlanding Found Me Again.

Somewhere along the way, I traded sunsets for deadlines.
Mountain passes for meeting rooms.
Stories for schedules.

I spent years climbing the corporate ladder across global fintech.
The career grew.
The titles changed.
The passport filled with business trips.
But something was missing.

Ten years later, I finally took the journey I'd been postponing.
90 days. 21,000+ kilometres. Six countries. No support vehicle.
Just me, my Pajero, and the road.
And somewhere between the deserts, mountains and endless silence... I found a version of myself I'd forgotten.

Sometimes the greatest escape isn't from the world.
It's back to yourself.

I miss the Freedom of Overlanding
No itinerary.
No deadlines.
No shortcuts.

Just the freedom to keep driving until a place makes you stop.
Because sometimes the greatest destination... is the person you become along the way.

You’re going in the right direction.

And sometimes, that’s all that matters.

Overlanding taught me that the road rarely goes exactly according to plan.

You miss a turn.
The weather changes.
The road disappears.
Plans get rewritten.

But you keep moving.

Because getting there quickly was never the point.

Direction matters more than speed.

As long as you're heading towards the life you want, you'll navigate your way there eventually.

One road. One border. One sunrise at a time.

The destination will come.

But the person you become along the way?

That's the real journey.

Keep going. The road knows the way.

Jokes aside, before I left Singapore, I was probably more paranoid about the Pajero than I needed to be.

Belts - changed.
Pulleys - changed.
Fluids - changed.
Wear-and-tear parts, a lot of parts.
Anything that could potentially become a problem thousands of kilometres from home - inspected.

And here's the funny part…

Some of the parts I replaced weren't even spoilt. 😂

I actually brought the old belts and parts with me as emergency spares.

Was it necessary?

Probably not.

Was I insecure?

ABSOLUTELY. 😂

Because when you're planning to drive one vehicle almost 20,000 km across Asia, through mountains, deserts, snowstorms, high-altitude passes and no man's lands…

there's a very big difference between:

"I think the car should be okay."

and

"I trust this car."

Out there, sometimes the nearest workshop isn't around the corner.

Sometimes there's nothing around the corner.

Just another 300 km of road.

And that's why preparation became such an important part of this expedition.

A massive THANK YOU to the guys at Conqueror Engineering for preparing the Pajero and supporting this journey before I even left Singapore.

They checked it.
They diagnosed it.
They replaced what needed replacing.
And when I became paranoid…

they probably entertained me more than they should have. 😂

Nearly 20,000 km later, through some of the toughest conditions I've ever driven…

the old Pajero brought me home.

No expedition begins at the border.

It begins months earlier, with the people who make sure you're ready to cross it.

Thank you.

"Why am I recording the ROAD?"
We don't have this in Singapore! 😂

But somewhere along the journey,
I realised I wasn't recording the road anymore.

I was recording memories.

Roads buried beneath snow.
Roads disappearing into deserts.
Roads through ice, mountains and rocky terrain.
Roads cutting across no man's lands where sometimes,
for hours, I wouldn't see another soul.

I've driven through snowstorms.
I've watched sand sweep across the horizon.
I've climbed mountain passes where the air became thin.
I've followed roads without knowing what was waiting beyond the next turn.

Some were beautiful.

Some scared the hell out of me.

And some made me pull over,
switch off the engine,
and just sit there in silence.

These roads brought me to places I never thought I would see.

But more importantly…

they changed the way I see myself.

Every kilometre became part of a story.
Every difficult road became a memory.
Every horizon made me want to see what was beyond the next one.

So why do I keep recording the road?

Because one day,
these roads will exist only in my memories.

And when that day comes,
I want to remember exactly how it felt
to be out there.

One man.
One car.
An adventure of a lifetime.

Why do I love deserts and no man's lands?

Because they remind me how vast this world really is.

Endless horizons.

Mountains shaped by millions of years.

Roads that disappear into nowhere.

Places where you can drive for hours without seeing another soul.

Some people would call it empty.

I call it beautiful.

Out there, the silence isn't lonely.

It's calming.

The kind of silence that slows your heartbeat and clears your mind.

The further I drove into the wilderness, the more I realised...

I wasn't looking for famous places.

I was looking for this feeling.

A place where time slows down.

Where every kilometre feels earned.

Where every sunrise and sunset feels like they were meant just for you.

Maybe that's why I keep returning to deserts, mountains, and no man's lands.

Not because they're easy to reach.

But because they remind me how extraordinary our world still is.

Slow Down - Turbo!!

The road taught me something I never expected.
We spend so much of our lives trying to get somewhere...
That we forget to look around while we're getting there.

I measured it by how many moments made me stop.
A sunrise.
A sunset.
A mountain.
A stranger's smile.
A road with no name.
A lake with no name.
The world has always been beautiful.

I was just moving too fast to notice.

Maybe...

Life isn't asking us to speed up.

Maybe it's asking us to...Slow down.

Silence is Golden.

The night before was unforgettable.
The sky was overflowing with stars, so many that it felt as though someone had scattered diamonds across the heavens.

Then came the sunrise.
With no plan, I followed a quiet trail and stumbled upon a hidden rock arch opening towards the sea.

The waves whispered. The morning light poured through the stone. Time seemed to stand still.

Sometimes the greatest adventures aren't the ones you plan.
They're the ones you discover when you slow down enough to notice.

Maybe that's what Solace really is.
Not finding a place...
But finding a moment where everything else disappears.

Coming Next - The Seven Stages of Overlanding
Most people only see the photos.
The mountains. The Vehicle. The border crossings. The destinations.

But they never see what happens before that.
The dream.
The fear.
The preparation.
The departure.
The breakdown.
The transformation.
The return.

Over the next few weeks, I'll share the seven stages that took me from Singapore to some of the most remote roads I've ever driven.
Not just the places...
But the lessons the road taught me.

Episode 1: The Dream - coming next.
One Man. One Vehicle. Endless Adventure.
