“Solarpunk” is all about showing the world building a better future, and that’s exactly what we did in NYC this summer! We are excited to spotlight Turning the Tide - our new multimedia ocean solutions exhibit that debuted at the @climateimaginarium on @governorsisland.

A huge thank you to Mariana and Christine from @friendsofthebay1987 as well as our EPIC clients Becca from @ca.marinesanctuaryfoundation and @bluewhalesblueskies, Doug from @malamamaunalua, Maddie from @himb_soest, and Amanda from @oceanyouthacademy for helping share your inspirational projects with the world. We’re so grateful for your support and collaboration!

This is just the beginning for Turning the Tide. We have tons of nifty interactive features that we cannot wait for you to experience. If you’re interested in bringing Turning the Tide (or a project just like it) to your next event, send us a message! by @solarpunk.studio

At the @climateimaginarium, artists, scientists, visionaries, and industry leaders come together to imagine what a more sustainable future can look like.

We’re proud to partner with @bluewhalesblueskies and @ca.marinesanctuaryfoundation to spotlight their commitment to protecting marine biodiversity, creating safer oceans for whales and cleaner air for humans.

Building a sustainable future takes all of us. When commercial brands and shipping companies join the conversation, we can turn bold ideas into meaningful action.

A few weeks ago, two explorers filled a sample bottle with fjord water in northwest Greenland. Within minutes, whales surfaced close enough to see. 🐋 That water is now eDNA data, on its way to researchers who’ll use it to map Arctic species they’d otherwise have no way to survey themselves. 🚣‍♂️ → 💧→ 🧬 → 📊 → 💡 → ‼️

Neither of the two people who filled that bottle is a marine biologist by training… and neither of them needed to be. The project was built for anyone curious enough to show up, same as the 2,391 coral reef censuses logged this year by local volunteers across four countries, same as the citizen science motion the org just got adopted by the @iucn_official .

Outside is where most of us feel most like ourselves. From a lab bench or a boardroom, that feeling — ya know, that intense joy of passion and curiosity that got you into this field — can feel miles off from where you are today. So, citizens: become scientists for a day. 🔬 Scientists: maybe it’s time to let yourself be a citizen again. 🕵️ Go find a project far outside your own discipline and let yourself be the one who doesn’t know everything yet. @adventurescientists is a great place to start.

Hey! Anna here, SPS founder. Say what you want about Anthropic, but they just did THE largest multilingual qualitative study ever conducted... and that’s pretty cool. Using AI tools, they interviewed 80,508 people across 159 countries (and 70 languages!) in a single week about their hopes, dreams, and fears about Artificial Intelligence.

My favorite finding is that, despite the doomy headlines and Hollywood scripts, “existential threat” actually comes in last on the list of concerns, and while “jobs and economy” are near the top, the actual number one concern is pretty simple: it’s not reliable enough yet. Another fun highlight for my Claude addicts: People getting the most out of AI are three times more likely to fear becoming dependent on it. (Never me.)

Even if you’re sick as we are of overhearing people bark “AI-AI-AI” like trained seals, the format of this article is beautiful - it’s published as a scrollytelling data visualization including a world map, a “quote wall”, and polished charts that demonstrate how 80,000 data points can become a salient, sculpted story about the hopes and dreams of humanity. by @solarpunk.studio

We are excited to welcome @katherinepinnock to the team at Solarpunk Studio! Katherine serves as our Operations Manager and Video Editor, keeping projects organized while bringing stories to life through video 💻 📸.

From Katherine: Hi! I’m originally from Long Island, New York. I enjoy watching movies (don’t ask how many times I have seen The Odyssey), listening to good music (I’m huge Beyoncé fan, but who isn’t?), and spending time with friends and family! by @solarpunk.studio

👀 No doubt they’re gonna give you the side eye when you bring it up, but your favorite scientist needs to become an influencer, like, yesterday... and here’s why, according to Pew Research.

👍 The good news: scientists are America’s most trusted profession right now. More than doctors (hello, Apple Cider Vinegar), journalists (sorry to my J School classmates), and elected officials (why is nobody looking shocked?). 77% of Americans “trust science,” up slightly from last year.

🧐 The weird news: Despite trusting scientists, only 57%, think science itself has had a “mostly positive effect” on society.

😢 The sad news: That number was 73% before the pandemic. Apparently we are skeptical of needles, or big tech, or the idea that anyone is attempting to do absolutely anything about climate change... and maybe rightly so.

✅ But here’s the takeaway for comms pros today: Trusting scientists as PEOPLE and understanding what science actually produces for our lives are two different things. We often work really hard on the second, while forgetting the ace up our sleeve that is the first.

👻 Science historian @naoreskes and sociologist Philip Cohen point out in an article by @mAnil Oza for @statnews News that because “so much of the work of scientific agencies is invisible”, “We [scientists] no longer have a choice” about showing up.

🎤 And boy do we love to see scientists stepping into the limelight – decked out in lab coats and blue jeans, wearing stardom like a caveat.

@amybowerscordalis stood at the base of Iron Gate Dam as an excavator took its first scoop. A tiny sparkle of water appeared where only red rock had been… barely visible, she said, like “a lone star above a night sky over a big city.”

Scientists had spent 20 years estimating how long salmon would take to return after the dams came down… 10 to 20 years, they said. The salmon came home in three days.

Amy told this story at Grist’s Turning the Tide event at @sfclimateweek alongside @grist journalist @naveenasivam , whose months-long investigation into invisible ethylene oxide exposure came down to staking out a warehouse in El Paso with a bag of pistachios, and @alexhonnold , who funds community solar projects and is, he would want you to know, “basically an overpaid day laborer that rock climbs a lot.”

The Klamath is in our backyard, and we had feelings. The video is out now.

Just here to share that @gunnar.hartmann.jpg winning entry in Nature’s #ScientistAtWork photo competition this year is a woman singing a rhythmic German tune from the back of an ultralight aircraft... to a flock of northern bald ibises she helped raise, who are following her on a 2,800 km migration from Germany to Spain.

Helena Wehner is a foster parent for the @waldrappteam , an Austrian conservation group working to reintroduce the Waldrapp into Europe (the birds disappeared from the region ~400 years ago). The ibises imprint on their human carers and are happy to follow them in the aircraft, which means reintroducing a species into the wild involves, among other things, someone singing to birds from a paraglider over olive groves in Jaén.

The collection has four other winning photos too, including a marine biologist who stayed “focused on microbes” while a silvertip shark snuck up on him in the Red Sea. (His colleagues’ hearts were racing.)
