One of the most unusual Lange 1 dials I’ve come across.

This is the Lange 1 Soirée, ref. 110.030, with a mother-of-pearl dial covered in guilloché.

From a distance it still looks like a normal Lange 1. Up close, the whole watch changes. The dial can look silver, white, grey or slightly blue depending on the light, and the texture gives it much more depth than you expect from photos.

It is definitely more decorative than the Lange 1s I usually gravitate toward, but it never feels overdone.

That is probably what I like most about it.

Still unmistakably Lange, just with a very different personality.

Lange called me out of the blue and told me they had something special for me. The serial number matched my birthday.

I had already said yes to the version without diamonds. Then a few weeks later they called again — my number had been selected as one of only five with the baguette bezel.

My first reaction was actually doubt. I’ve always loved Lange because of how restrained their watches are, so I thought the diamonds might be too much.

Then I saw it in person and realised I was wrong.

The baguettes don’t compete with the black enamel dial. They frame it, and somehow make the black look even deeper.

The more I wear it, the more I notice the quieter details — the numerals, the circles within circles, the tourbillon opening, and the hand engraving on the back that almost nobody sees.

That’s probably what I love most about Lange. Even on something this special, the little details still matter.

The bracelet is probably the first thing people notice. Ironically, it isn’t Lange’s work.

It was made by Wellendorff in Pforzheim — a jeweller, not a watchmaker — because making a gold bracelet to this standard is its own discipline.

I actually like that Lange went outside the manufacture for it rather than pretending every part had to come from Glashütte.

These bracelets are no longer made. What exists is what exists.

And on this watch, the only part that didn’t come out of Glashütte is the part people ask me about most.

The A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1.

I’ve always thought the Lange 1 has one of the most distinctive dial layouts in watchmaking. The off-centre time display, oversized date and power reserve indicator shouldn’t work so well together, but somehow they do.

What I particularly like is how balanced everything feels despite the asymmetry. And turning it over reveals a beautifully finished movement that is just as enjoyable to look at.

A design that has stood the test of time and still looks as good today.

The A. Lange & Söhne Richard Lange, Ref. 232.021 in yellow gold.

I’ve always liked the simplicity of this watch. The solid silver dial, Roman numerals, yellow gold hands and that beautiful blued seconds hand work so well together.

The way the yellow gold hands change colour under the light is what captivates me the most.
Nothing complicated, just a beautifully made watch that gets all the little details right.

The week indicator is probably the least necessary thing on this watch. That’s exactly why I like it.

The outer ring counts the weeks of the year, one to fifty-two. Almost nobody needs that on a perpetual calendar, but it’s there for the people who actually think in week numbers rather than dates.

Underneath is the ultra-thin calibre 2120, one of those movements that has become part of watchmaking history in its own right.

And then there’s the salmon dial.

That wasn’t a decision I expected to make, but on this watch it completely changes the character.

For me, this is still one of the best Royal Oak perpetual calendars ever made.

One of my favourite Lange watches, and one of the very few where I think the diamonds actually make the watch better.

On paper, a baguette bezel on a Lange sounds like it should be too much. In person, it does the opposite.

The diamonds frame the dial rather than compete with it, and they somehow make the black enamel feel even deeper.

The tourbillon already gives the watch enough drama. The stones just sharpen everything around it.

I don’t normally look to Lange for diamonds.

This is the exception.

The Saxonia Thin is probably one of the simplest watches Lange makes, but that’s also what makes it so appealing to me.

Two hands, a black onyx dial, and a beautifully finished movement. Nothing more than what is needed.
