For the longest time I thought some kids were just naturally drawn to screens more than others. Or that once you’ve introduced screens when they were small, it was a lost battle.

But the more I learned about child development the more I realised something that changed everything.

Screen free kids are not born. They are raised.
Not through strict rules or screen time battles. But through intentional small habits you build over time.

I noticed the parents that hadn’t offered screens to their children did something differently.

Save this to come back to it.
Share it with a parent who needs to hear this right now.

I used to think doing more meant being better.

More classes. More playdates. More activities every single weekend. More guilt when I couldn’t keep up with it all.

It took me a long time to realise that less was actually more.

Less rushing to fix every emotion and more sitting with them in it.

Less overscheduling and more space for them to just be bored and figure it out.

Less comparing and more trusting that my children are exactly where they need to be.

If any of this sounds like you, save this and remember you are not behind. You are just figuring it out like the rest of us.

Follow @solmagrow for honest intentional parenting and screen free play from a millennial mom building it all in real time.

The meltdown when you take the screen away is not your child being difficult.

It’s your child being completely blindsided by a transition they weren’t prepared for.
And honestly? We’ve all been there.

Here’s what actually works:
	1.	Never take it away cold turkey. Give warnings. Five minutes. Then two. Then one. Let them feel it coming. No negotiations after that. Every “5 more minutes” teaches them to push harder each time.

	2.	Always replace it with something not nothing. Have an activity ready before you even switch it off. Puzzle on the table. Sticker book on the floor. Something their hands can go straight to. Movement, drink or snack also work.

	3.	Set the rule before the screen turns on, not after. Decide the stop time before they even start watching. 1 episode of a show, 30min with a timer. If the rule is made while they are already watching, your child will negotiate like their life depends on it. When the boundary exists from the beginning there is nothing to argue about.

Three steps. No drama. No guilt. Just a calmer way through the hardest part of the day.

Save this for today and try just one step at a time.
Share it with a mom who needs this right now 💛

The happiest, most confident and highest performing children in the world don’t start formal learning until age 7.

No flashcards.
No reading drills.
No pressure to perform before they’re ready.

Just play.
Deep, intentional, screen-free play.

And by their teens they outperform almost every other country in literacy, wellbeing and happiness. With less anxiety and more joy than children who were pushed to learn earlier.

Research shows that children who learn to read at 5 perform exactly the same as children who learn at 7 by the time they reach age 11. The early push gives no long term advantage. Just more pressure on little minds that aren’t ready for it yet.

So when your child loses themselves in an activity they are building focus.

When they figure something out on their own they are building confidence.

When they try again after getting it wrong they are building resilience.

That is not falling behind. That is exactly how it is supposed to look.

The pressure to do more, teach more and push more doesn’t give our children an advantage. It just takes away the one thing they need most right now. The freedom to be little.

Trust the play.
Trust the process.
Trust your child.

Save this for the days you need the reminder 💛

Signs your child is developing real resilience and focus:

1. They try the same thing more than once
This isn’t stubbornness.
It’s a child who hasn’t learned to quit yet.
And that is everything.

2. They talk themselves through a challenge
“No… wait… maybe this way…”
That little voice is problem-solving out loud.
It means their mind feels free enough to think.

3. They get frustrated but don’t walk away
The wobbling lip. The deep breath. The trying again.
That’s not a meltdown waiting to happen.
That’s emotional regulation being built in real time.

4. They block out distractions when they’re engaged
The TV is on. You’re talking. Dinner is ready.
And they’re still focused.
That’s not ignoring you.
That’s deep concentration — and it’s rare. Protect it.

5. They celebrate the small wins
“I did it!”
Not for your reaction.
But because something inside them recognised their own effort.
That’s intrinsic motivation. And it starts here.

6. They come back to the same activity again and again
Repetition isn’t boredom.
It’s mastery in progress.
They’re going deeper, not just going through the motions.

7. They ask for help without giving up completely
“Can you help me?”
This is not weakness.
This is a child who knows their limits and still chooses to keep going.

That’s resilience with self-awareness.
Resilience and focus aren’t built in a classroom.
They’re built in the quiet, ordinary moments of everyday play.

Did any of these surprise you? Comment ‘YES’ if you’re seeing this at home 👇

Dinner out with kids doesn’t have to mean handing over the iPad.

I stopped bringing ours and dinners got so much calmer.

Here’s what now lives in my bag:

1️⃣ Dubai Sticker Book
2️⃣ LED Drawing Pad
3️⃣ Colouring + How-To-Draw Cards
4️⃣ UNO Cards
5️⃣ I Spy + Tic Tac Toe

Save this for your next restaurant outing, and share it with any mum who’s tired of handing over screens.

Stop “fixing” their play.
It sounds counterintuitive, but when we jump in the second our kids get frustrated, we rob them of the chance to build Cognitive Endurance, the ability to stay with a problem until it’s solved.
In a world of instant digital wins, this “struggle muscle” is the greatest gift we can give them. 🧠

Here are 3 ways to build it today👇
1️⃣ The 5-Minute Rule: When they want to quit, ask for “5 more minutes of trying” before you step in. The breakthrough usually happens in those final minutes.
2️⃣ Praise the Process: Swap “You’re so smart” for “I love how you tried four different ways to fit that piece.”
3️⃣ Low-Dopamine Play: Prioritize puzzles and building blocks over tablets. It trains the brain to find “flow” without the constant pings.
You don’t need hours. 15 minutes of focused, screen-free play is enough to start.

Stop the sibling toy wars. ✋

In a world of “one-player” screens, collaborative play is the ultimate skill-builder. Most kids activities in Dubai are designed for one, but our Day in the Desert puzzle is built for teamwork. It’s the ultimate screen-free entertainment that bridges the gap between siblings (ages 3–7).

While they work together to find the Arabian Oryx or the cozy desert camp, they aren’t just playing; they are building social-emotional skills and local pride. 🇦🇪

Why UAE parents love this best-seller:

✨ Teamwork: One goal, two kids, zero arguments. 48 large pieces, easy to share.

✨ Sustainable: High-quality, eco-friendly materials designed in the UAE.

✨ Educational: A tactile way to learn about our beautiful desert home.

No refereeing required. Just quiet focus, local discovery, and a finished masterpiece they both own.
