In this interview, academic Dr Paula Teixeira Moláns speaks to interdisciplinary artist Sol Mussa – both are from Galicia, 'a non-state nation known for its waves of migration' – about Mussa's artistic practice and personal experiences of migration. Across her work in film and visual art, Mussa thoughtfully explores her Galician-Mozambican identity, speaking the Galician language (known as galego), representation in the art world, finding comfort in the cosmopolitanism of London, trash and hierarchy, and more.

En 1961, Piero Manzoni enlatou a súa propia ‘Merde d’artista’ como unha provocación contra o mercado da arte e da figura do creador. ‘Holy Shit’ é unha interpretación desa obra que se traslada a unha problemática local provocada polo turismo masivo en Galicia. Un turismo que ademais de ensuciar de maneira literal os campos de cultivo, produce a perda da cultura local, o esmorecemento medioambiental ou o aumento do coste de vida.

En lugar da “merda de artista”, presento
“merda de peregrino”, convertida en souvenir irónico.
Cada peza é única, xa que se reviste cun selo real diferente do Camiño de Santiago, recolocado
como etiqueta industrial.

In 1961, Piero Manzoni canned his own Merda d’artista as a provocation against the art market and the figure of the creator. Holy Shit is an interpretation of that work, relocated to a local issue caused by mass tourism in Galicia. A form of tourism that, besides dirtying, also produces the loss of local culture, environmental degradation, and the rising cost of living.

Instead of “artist’s shit,” I present “pilgrim’s shit,” transformed into an ironic souvenir.
Each piece is unique, as it is covered with a different real stamp from the Camino de Santiago, repositioned as an industrial label.

1961 konservierte Piero Manzoni seine eigene Merda d’artista in Dosen – als Provokation gegen den Kunstmarkt und die Rolle des Künstlers als Schöpferfigur. Holy Shit ist eine Interpretation dieses Werks, übertragen auf ein lokales Problem, das durch den Massentourismus in Galicien entsteht. Ein Tourismus, der nicht nur ganz buchstäblich landwirtschaftliche Flächen verschmutzt, sondern auch zum Verlust lokaler Kultur, zur Umweltzerstörung und zu steigenden Lebenshaltungskosten führt.

Anstelle von „Künstlerscheiße“ präsentiere ich „Pilgerscheiße“, verwandelt in ein ironisches Souvenir.
Jedes Stück ist einzigartig, da es mit einem echten, unterschiedlichen Stempel des Camino de Santiago versehen ist, der als industrielles Etikett neu eingesetzt wurde.

Welcome Sol Mussa as our new artist in residence!

Sol Mussa (b. Vigo, 1996) is a multidisciplinary artist pursuing a PhD in Creation and Research in Contemporary Art at the University of Vigo.

During the Novos Valores residency, she will develop Biblioteca Decolonial, a project based on old books rescued from a private library in Galicia that were destined to be discarded. Using a range of techniques, she will transform this material into new objects. The project connects Galician symbolism with decolonial perspectives, addressing issues of sustainability, race, and cultural diversity. Her practice seeks to create space for alternative ways of seeing, questioning how white-dominant histories shape visual culture.

At the Walter & Nicole Leblanc Foundation, she will engage with the Foundation’s archives as living material—approaching rhythm, repetition, and movement in dialogue with her own process-based practice. Brussels is a key context for the project: a city shaped by cultural diversity and ongoing debates around colonial memory, where she will encounter artists and scholars working critically in this field, expanding the research through exchange and dialogue.

The Novos Valores artist residency porgramme was launched by the Provincial Council of Pontevedra in collaboration with the Matadero Madrid Contemporary Creation Center and the Walter & Nicole Leblanc Foundation.

joining @megroselloydjones on @netilradio tomorrow for our “Hard Truths” edition- a selection of tracks inspired by Mike Leigh’s latest film + our response to the Oscars season.

In contrast to the glamour of the red carpet, this selection will be obscure, dark and filthy, with tracks that reveal anger and the hard truths hidden behind the sets, the industry and stories no one wants to tell.
