Yo La Tengo - Beach Party Tonight

Lately my ear's been caught the most on melody lines joined in tandem by some pitched percussion, usually in the form of a glockenspiel or marimba or vibe, maybe a celesta if someone out there's feeling spicy. It extends beyond genre, too: I'm hearing it in alt rock, Motown, punk, the Ace Attorney and Zelda soundtracks. And something ambient like this opening track, where it's only in the last fifty or so seconds. When I had first noticed something was tracing the contours of the guitar, I noticed the guitar wasn't really unmoored either. Then I noticed Ira's vocal, then the brass, and everything else kind of bloomed into view from there.

Older post below, which I'm sure I wrote after some hangout.

'I fall asleep, sift through the wreckage, and conjure up the ghosts of dorm parties under the Christmas lights. If these ghosts come to me too wrapped up in each other to tell any one of them apart, the best pieces of each of them still rise from the whole and cut through. The album cover and lyrics both capture this stream of consciousness theme quite nicely, as moments and emotions bleed into each other, with little sense of demarcation.

"I want to go back
To the time when I was seven
If I could just go home
I could go around in circles
I know that I'd be frightened
To go home" ' by @solracfresno

Drive-By Truckers - The Opening Act (2008)

I’d put this near the top of the most beautiful vignettes set to music that I know of. Making the best of a corny topic like a down-and-out musical opener by narrowing the focus to one man’s existential crisis, and eschweing any idea of a big break, what’s left is a captivating and heroic emotional ride I like to come back to when I’m feeling wistful.

Indeed, the movement of the thing evokes a short film even more than the song it is. A fake cowboy wannabe spit out by a mechanical bull, the thinning of the crowd when it’s not your night, the man you give your money to for a fleeting thing, and the Technicolor horizon as the van quietly leaves for the next town. Not really a tragedy of broken dreams, more an attempt at bouncing back from the humiliation that might come in chasing a dream. Patterson Hood’s narrator adds some inner thoughts that make the finishing touches on a beautiful and contemplative atmosphere, while the music dictates the mood as somber or hopeful, all handled by some gentle country shuffle.

Lastly, check out Hood’s vocal performance, especially on the last stanza.

“And I'm driving north as the sun was rising over a Technicolor horizon
I reached out to touch you but you're not there, you’re a thousand miles away from here
I turned up the radio, heard some preacher talking salvation
My tank is half full and I reached over and changed the station”

That’s some acting.

I’m going to start migrating my old Facebook writings on music over here, because it’s always been my favorite thing to do and I love the sparks I feel when chasing that Sisyphean peak of articulating the ineffable. Longtime homies may remember these posts as those weird checkpoints between all the memes that dared cross my “Share Now” button. Old thoughts will have new ones filled in.

Latin Playboys - ¡Mira!

This album moves and breathes as one organic thing. The fourth track here is still the most magical display of stereo mixing I have ever heard. You're caught in some noisy celebration with conversation, laughs, a tiny little band, and a dad telling his kid to look, look! Mira! Because Dumbo is coming! A rickety caravan comes by, and horns bloom from the same place as some makeshift drums, which is to say from seemingly nowhere.

There are things that offer you a feeling of nostalgia, and then there's this: surrealism that places you right back in that semi-confused state of infancy where everything was more exciting just because it was so scary and lively. I think of how my dad would call my attention towards things in the same way when I was young.

Being in Seattle now, surrounded by new types of love and connections, I more fondly remember the unique warmth of family gatherings back home. There is still nothing like this swirly, hazy atmosphere of living memory.
