Equinox release and reflections 🌱🎶

Enter Spring 2024, I was invited to a collaborative, community-building art workshop “from our roots to yours.” The seeds planted: a demo where I layered harmonies and sampled traditional folk singing + instruments from my family’s ancestral region. When I saw the call for the inaugural @wmn.global compilation seeking themes of connection, identity, and legacy… I knew this track belonged (t)here.

As a second-generation of the Southeast Asian diaspora in so-called Canada, my identity is rooted in the extreme risks my parents’ generation took to cross the Mekong River to Thailand for refuge. I see haunting parallels to that history today.

In honour of Women’s History Month, this song is an acknowledgment that maternal lineage cannot be broken. We remain resilient through every displacement and we are still here. I am making a call for critical thinking to be a trend as we cannot afford to conflate complex global or interpersonal conflicts into simple “us vs. them” terms. This track is an ode to moving beyond those binaries, reclaiming our truth to power, and to oscillate towards thriving.

🌻 Facts no one asked for 🙃
‘Solreia’ is my imagined interpretation of a part of my full name which is translating: ‘a ray of sunlight or sunshine’. For this reason I don’t see Solreia as an alter-ego, but more of a long-term art project (also, because mononyms).

💭 I was once tasked to write a paper about a painter of my choosing, so I chose van Gogh. As tragic as his story is I realize even more now why I’m drawn to his art— when it comes to listening to, playing, or making music my 🧠 goes post-Impressionist. Top of mind, music to me is: mental health; art & science; peaks & valleys— hearing life in colours. 🙏🏽

Last month’s reflections from @solreia’s notebook:
Reclaiming our (deliberately) hidden histories, intersectional identities, and (queer) joy. 📜

The footnotes are heavy, but it’s worth acknowledging as we move out of Asian / Pacific Islander Heritage Month into Filipino Heritage & Pride Month… our diaspora has always been multi-faceted, and our ancestors gender-transcendental since ancient times. We refuse to be flattened as a monolith or by catch-all acronyms that do not center us. Even though May is over, our visibility isn’t, and the ‘invisible tax’ will be returned to sender.

Our residency continues with the concept of Downtime Disco, a space designed to slow down, listen deeply, and share the room together. Less rush, more intention. Good sound, warm atmosphere, and conversation.

This month, we are excited to welcome Vsuvius, the collaborative project of Instagador and Solreia!! They will be joining resident Kozue behind the decks to soundtrack the night.

To complement the sound, Toi Whakairo will be providing live visuals, creating an immersive lo-fi atmosphere throughout the evening.

As always, Bleach will be pouring natural wines and serving seasonal small plates. 🍷🍽️
