![Lately I've been reflecting on the sublime. On the monumental behemoths that make us feel completely insignificant. They freeze us in awe, so we forget who we are all together.
I'm talking about the ocean, the mountains, the canyons, the waterfalls, the ships, the airplanes, the elephants, the moon, and the planets.
I remember being completely struck by this feeling the first time I watched the ships come in through the Ballard Locks in Seattle. And while backpacking for the first time on Brokentop Mountain in Oregon, and getting to see glaciers and mountain peaks close up at eye level.
I think there can be freedom in feeling small this way. It takes us out of our own heads and breaks down our egos. Perspective is everything, and helps us see the big picture.
Let me know which detail is your favorite n the comments 🖤

![I've been reflecting lately on portals and perspectives.
Meditating can be a portal.
Dreaming can be a portal.
Learning can be a portal.
We enter through the gate with one perspective, and arrive at another.
I remember reading Homer's Odyssey in high school and being mesmerized by it. Particularly by the mythical encounters delaying his return home. I imagined there's no way they were in the same physical world they had been before. Were they in a new dimension? Or were these encounters symbolic, and in his subconscious? These feelings resurfaced after seeing Christopher Nolan's version this summer. When he finally returns home, he shoots his arrow through the axes before the suitors and the portal is closed. A chapter complete.
When we see an eclipse, another portal occurs. For a short while, all of our surroundings appear differently: two shadows under one light source, the sky fades to dusk, everything becomes quiet. Then comes illumination once again. We see the world in a new way after having experienced this strange alternate world together.
In celebration of a new chapter, my family road tripped to Santa Barbara. In the car driving through Ballard Canyon, we sang Joni Mitchell's, "Both Sides Now" in unison, like a spell: another portal crossed. I laughed at the irony with tears in my eyes. We were seeing from both sides now.
