Mad late, but here’s a few shots of the @hiffhawaii film festival and @ohinashowcase event.
It’s been a dream to see our work be embraced by community, and see these kids display their acting, music, and joy.
For months, I got to bust out mic skills and cruise with old and new friends, kids, other filmmakers to talk about art and justice and jokes and getting by. A different way of being, a sort of fame and fortune. Every skill I’ve got in a little movie and everything that came after making it. I want this to be the beginning of a journey, not a detour.

Sincerest gratitude to the staff of @oha_hawaii for inviting me to write about the decades-long movement to end mass incarceration and banishment in Hawaii for @kawaiolanews - see their link for the story!

We kept in the critical race theory and moral advocacy. Here’s a line that stayed: “The practice of sending Kānaka Maoli and Pacific Islander men to prisons on the continent is the ultimate expression of American colonialism in the 21st century; a reflection of centuries of systemic oppression, cultural erasure, and displacement from the ʻāina.” 💐

This isn’t a Linkd In mixer so nobody cares about your resume- just saying I’ve been writing and working on justuce and equality my whole adult life. Here’s a pic of me on a horse tour on the land of the akimel o’odam because I didn’t take any pictures of the private prison and immigration detention center it ain’t that kinda place. by @solvnt

I’m processing these New York Minutes. I wasn’t sure what to expect attending my first film festival as a writer / director. The Pacific Island film community was so loving and supportive.
I’ll have to come back to this but for now:
- We won Best Short Film! Wild!
- shoulda worn a suit to the awards
- gave a speech felt like I blacked out
- new friends feel like old lifelong friends
- I hate time square
- I like the left at 90th Rockaway, the disco in Brooklyn, halal smoothies, the A train, cheap coffee
- 2 drinks in and I’m busting out tha accent fair warning to ya (Scorsese ova hea who he think he is) taken in Columbus Circle / Central Park New York by @solvnt

Some of the kids just finished an awesome film workshop! I want to celebrate, but we were just told the federal govt intends to cut funding for PBS, @picpacific that helped us make our film, and anything that isn’t a private sycophantic platform. That little investment is helping us share stories about the Pacific now, around the world.
What I understand the least about current US politics is the cruelty to kids. The defunding of school lunches, attacks on lawful resident parents, indifference to the murder of Palestinian kids— it’s wrong and we’ll keep fighting and telling stories. To hell with this president, the fools who voted for him, and long live the great Pacific with its stories and cultures that bind us. taken in Honolulu, Hawaii by @solvnt

Proud of Fran. In the decade I’ve known him there have been endless bikes and jokes and stories. He’s gotten his diploma and is now being an absolute angel in the Navy. People you meet become family, it just happens that way.

The news is terrible but I don’t ever remember it being all that great for us. It’s still name / home / ancestor, one bicycle, one case, one kid at a time. by @solvnt
