My role as a dance movement therapist is not to fix you… you are not broken.

Often we go to a therapy looking for someone to give us answers and help us fix what feels broken. And whilst that would be a quick solution, I don’t believe in giving your power away, no coach or therapist should be telling you what to do.

In dance movement psychotherapy the answers come from you, through the process, not from me.

My role is to create the conditions for that to happen by working with movement and sensation because that is where experiences lives, it sits under the level of explanation.

I lot of people I work with have already done talk therapy, can bake their patterns, but cannot seek to shift them. Including the body in the work can help when insight and understanding alone has not been enough.

This work is relational, it’s slow and is led by you.

There isn’t just one way to work with your nervous system.

Some days you need to slow down and soften. Other days you need to move, shift energy and build capacity.

Sometimes you need space to explore what your body is holding in a more therapeutic way.

So I offer all three.

SWEAT with Soma Sessions is an energetic somatic workout class designed for activation, building resilience and capacity.

SOFTEN with Soma Sessions is a down-regulating session to release.

1:1 therapy is for deeper body based exploration.

All three are rooted in nervous system education and designed to help you feel more connected to yourself.

If you’re not sure where to start, send me a DM or book a free 15 minute call.

Dance movement therapy is quite a misunderstood modality because the name makes people picture a dance class.

It’s far from it, it’s actually clinical therapy that uses movement and the body as the main way of working through emotional and psychological experience.

The premise is simple, the body holds a lot of what the mind either can’t access or can’t articulate and movement enables it to go somewhere. To change how you feel in your body you often have to move different first. New patterns create new experiences.

Developed in the mid 20th century its evidence based work.

The therapeutic relationship is central to this work because it’s not just about the movement itself, it’s about having a safe, attuned relationship so you can explore. The relational container is what makes it therapy rather than just a movement practice.

If movement feels weird or awkward for you, it’s not a bad thing. Your brain is doing what you want it to. I know that sounds weird but hear me out.

Most of us our stuck in the same movement patterns we’ve had for years! Movement patterns are thought patterns, it’s the way you hold your body, move through space, the direction you go, at what pace, how you do or don’t take up space, it’s all connected to how you process the world.

Research suggests that introducing unfamiliar movement creates new neural pathways in your brain which means if you want to think differently, respond differently and feel differently, you first have to move differently.

So if you come to any type of movement session and feel like a beginner, that’s great! That’s exactly the point, the old cliche get comfortable being uncomfortable is where the change happens in movement therapy. So embrace feeling awkward because that’s where the growth happens. by @soma_sessions

Body First is a 4-week somatic movement program blending guided somatic exercises, free and authentic movement to help you release tension, build body awareness, confidence, embodiment and develop tools you can use in every day life.

You can come to all 4 sessions or drop in to just 1.

This week we’re exploring water and fluidity.

Fluid, indirect movement that follows the breath and the body’s natural impulse, rather than any set choreography.

Each sessions includes guided somatic exercises, cues to help you notice what your body is doing and where it holds back and then space to move freely with curiosity.

Grounded in dance movement therapy and somatic practice.

There’s a few spots left for this week.

No experienced needed.

Wednesdays in Burleigh 5:30-6:30pm

In a world that profits from women feeling disconnected, anxious and not enough, being connected to your body and able to listen to it’s wisdom and trust your intuition is one of the most radical things you can do.

When you’re connected to your body you stop outsourcing your sense of self to everything and everyone around you.

This is why somatic movement therapy is powerful, when you start moving from the inside out, you stop second guessing yourself and start to trust what you feel, which enables you to make decisions from a place of knowing and certainty.

Body First is my 4-week movement program for reconnecting with yourself.

Starting Wednesday’s in October on the Gold Coast.

A 2022 study found that people with chronic spinal pain reduced their pain medication use by over 75% after Hanna Somatic sessions.

And a study published in The BMJ found an 86% reduction in days of pain for people with chronic back pain who practiced the Alexander Technique over one year.

Hanna Somatics is a method of movement retraining that teaches the brain to release patterns of chronic muscle tension. It’s re-educating the nervous system to let go of tension, bracing and holding patterns.

Both techniques work on the same principle, that the body holds patterns and specific movement can change them.

Keep an eye out for Body Dialogue, my upcoming 4-week in person somatic movement program for chronic pain in Burleigh in October.

Link will be in my bio tomorrow, or DM me DIALOGUE and I’ll send you the link 💛 by @soma_sessions

One of my favorite parts of a connect Yang class is the flow.

One track
2 counts of 8 on repeat

It’s not about getting the movement perfect, it’s about finding flow. And once you have the movement, playing around with breath, making the movement continuously flow, finding extra length, space, balance and finding the rhythm and beat of the music and how that influences your movement.

Try this one at home 💜💙 by @soma_sessions
