Comuna 13 stacked in the hills of Medellin 🇨🇴

Engines hum, reggaeton floats in the air, vendors wave red and yellow and green tees and trinkets as you weave through the crowd.

You’re in Comuna 13, one of the 16 communes of the city of Medellin, Colombia. Once considered one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the world, Comuna 13 is now a vibrant hub for art and culture, becoming a symbol of resilience and memory 🐘

Lots for locals to reckon with. Increased tourism brings economic growth and opportunity as well as disruption to local life. Infrastructure is limited. Locals navigate intergenerational trauma - La Escombrera, or “the dump,” a mass grave of locals that were forcibly disappeared by state military and illegal paramilitary groups in the 80s/90s, looms in the background. It’s a complex history.
