This book is not AI, you’ll feel it when I talk directly to you through the pages. You’ll see it in the nuance, side eyes, hiccups, and whatever mistakes I missed. So many different versions of this book and myself (the mom… mami? Mamacita!) I illustrated everything from scratch, which was the funnestest part. I created each recipe myself, cooked them over and over for a few years to make sure I’m not sending ppl to make w h a t e v e r. Found out I’m not a baker like my Lela. Intentionally informal and exceptionally direct — you can pretend like I emailed this cookbook to you sent from an iPhone. A person made this to share. With some help from friends too, MASSIVE SHOUTOUT to my contributors — an even bigger one to the ones that contributed in prayer and encouragement. My work is done when I give it to you all. The rest is God, whose been waiting longer than anyone. This project was postponed 3 times from underestimating the process of writing, producing, self-publishing, printing, AND distributing… but mostly just the weight of fear.

And I’m still scared. But Godspeed.

I started this book as a class project, I was in a publishing class in grad school and had to make a book using my new inDesign skills. So I was like wait… I’ve already done all this research about my own (newly diagnosed) IBS, and I’ve made all these adjustments to recipes I like, let me make something for myself that makes it easier to find all my notes…

…and here we are 4 years later.

For The Art of Care, Genesis Cubilette created The Shape of Return, a digital pop-art silhouette collection honoring survivors of sexual violence.

Centered on the body as both archive and witness — mapping where trauma is held, and where healing begins. This work holds the understanding that healing is not always about becoming someone new, but about reclaiming what has always belonged to us and choosing how we are transformed by it. It is an act of returning power to the places that have been most vulnerable, and in doing so, re-empowering the body. No explicit body parts shown. No identities revealed. Only a collective zoom toward the liberation of our bodies.

Creative expression, storytelling, and space as an act of care. Sometimes life is mad cool. Sometimes we take the broken pieces, cry on it, stir it up, and plaster them into something that makes the most beautifulestest sense possible. And sometimes we get to celebrate it all with community and loved ones around.

What a beautiful creative process, from applying, to the evening pictured. Thank you to @natasha.paige for organizing this all so so well, thanks to @arewefreelance for capturing these pictures, so on point, and thank you to @ppsne for opportunity and intention behind this gallery.

Most specialestest thank you to God for the tools to create, and the love He surrounds me with that makes it all feel so worth it. To my sisters in grief: being a survivor is lifelong, I’ll choose the fight to uplift our voices for the rest of my life — thank you so much for trusting me to tell your stories. Shoutout to all the artists whose work was exhibited in this show, it’s so lovely to meet y’all and I reeeeally hope to cross paths again. by @somegenesis

“The Shape of Return” by me! A pop-art collection honoring survivors of sexual violence. The most important part of this project are the stories that these portraits come from. My biggest thanks goes to GOD, each of the brave survivors portrayed here, and Planned Parenthood for creating a space for local artists to openly share their voices, stories, and creative expression as an act of care. What an opportunity. I can’t wait to share more about it.
