Another humble utilization project i’ve been working on this summer has been candles made from tallow. Obviously fats have been used for a long time to fuel light. Beef fat in particular burns off without emitting much particulate that affects our lung/brain health. Big Candle, mostly made from petroleum and soy, emits quite a bit of fine particulate when burning, which is a reason why I wanted to dabble in creating something better for us.

Such clarified tallow is still quite soft, so I reached out to my favorite beekeeper @ifuckwithbugs for some bees wax. It was really fun to work with this tacky, sweet natural abundance for the first time. When I have the time and I’m ready for my next humiliation-by-craft, maybe for the holidays, I’ll work out some taper candles.

Citronella is an essential summer scent and helpful outside to keep mosquitos and flies at a distance. I grew up eating dinner out on the back patio most nights in the hot dank maryland summer, so we always lit a citronella candle or two. This aroma of this beautiful plant makes me feel relaxed, safe, and nostalgic. Each 8oz candle is dosed with at least an ounce of citronella essential oil, produced in Indonesia.
