Situation: It's before Halloween, and the store is advertising its SPOOKY “Old Vine” wines.

In places like In Australia’s Barossa Valley, laws protect wines from vines aged 35, 70, 100, and 125+ years!

Mature vines produce smaller crops, which can lead to concentration, balance, and a wine that’s distinctive of its home.

California has vineyards that have survived for generations (like historic Zinfandel plantings in Northern California), but the U.S. has no legal definition of “old vine” on wine labels. The phrase can mean different things to different producers.

Yes—but be curious. How old are the vines? Where are they? Is the producer telling their story?
In the U.S., “old vine” isn’t guarantee a particular age or quality. by @sommandtable
