Sophomore Amanda Mitan of @smcougsvball will transfer to Geneva College (PA), an NCAA Division III school in Beaver Falls, Pa., for the upcoming 2026 fall season. A 5-9 middle blocker from Chandler, Mitan appeared in 31 matches for the Cougars over 2024 and 2025 and totaled 70 kills, 30 total blocks, and 31 digs. As a sophomore in 2025, Mitan appeared in 16 matches and 51 sets for #SMCC. She compiled 55 kills, 25 digs, 23 block assists, seven assists, and two service aces for the season, and posted 31 kills, 16 digs, 15 block assists, five assists, and one service ace against ACCAC Division II opponents. She recorded a career-high 11 kills and hit .647 on 17 swings in a victory over Cleveland CC (NC) on Sept. 19, and produced seven kills and hit .538 in 13 swings at Yavapai College on Oct. 11. Mitan recorded a career-high seven digs against Phoenix College on Oct. 3, and posted a career-high four block assists three times. Mitan appeared in 15 matches and 26 sets as a freshman in 2024, finishing with 15 kills, seven total blocks (one solo, six assists), and six digs for the year. She posted five kills in a match at Mesa CC on Aug. 28, had three other matches with two kills, and registered a season-high two block assists and three digs at MCC on Aug. 28. The Philadelphia Phillies selected right-handed pitcher Jaxon Jelkin, a member of the 2023 South Mountain Community College baseball team, in the fourth round with pick No. 135 of the 2026 Major League Baseball Draft. Jelkin has spent the past two seasons at the University of Kentucky and went 8-3 with a save, a 4.08 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP, and 106 strikeouts in 97 innings of work in 2026. Jelkin recorded complete games against Tennessee and Florida for the Wildcats this past spring, helping UK clinch an NCAA Tournament berth at the Morgantown Regional hosted by West Virginia University. At the four-team regional, Jelkin started the opener against Wake Forest, totaling five strikeouts in six innings as the Wildcats posted a 6-5 victory over the Demon Deacons. He also pitched against the host Mountaineers on June 1, tossing 2.2 frames with three punchouts. He missed all of 2025 recovering from an injury. Jelkin spent the 2024 season at the University of Houston. He made seven starts for the Cougars but did not record a decision in 34.1 innings of work. He recorded 46 strikeouts and held opponents to a .217 batting average with a 3.41 ERA before an injury cut his campaign short. The New York Mets selected Jelkin in the ninth round with pick No. 263 in the 2024 MLB Draft, but he opted to transfer to Kentucky. In 2023, Jelkin finished 7-2 with a 3.81 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 75.2 innings of work for SMCC. He posted wins over Salt Lake CC, Lamar CC, Yavapai College, Cochise College, Paradise Valley CC, Chandler-Gilbert CC, and Eastern Arizona in 2023. He tossed complete-game wins over Eastern Arizona and Yavapai College and fanned a season-high 12 batters in a win over Lamar CC. The Los Angeles Dodgers selected Jelkin in the 14th round (pick No. 430) in the 2023 MLB Draft, but Jelkin elected to attend the University of Houston in 2024.The Cougars have now had a player or former player selected in the MLB Draft for six straight years: Cade Povich and Ronan Kopp (2021), Gustavo Sosa (2022), Jaxon Jelkin (2023, 2024, 2026), Core Jackson (2025), and Raul Garayzar (2025). by @somtncougars

The @smccmgolf program & head coach Marcus Smith announced the program's four-year transfers from the 2025-26 squad. The Cougars rallied for a third-place finish at the 2026 NJCAA Division II National Championships and won the Region I Division II and ACCAC titles. Sophomore PJ Segerstrom, a 2025 NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American, will continue his intercollegiate golf career at Sacramento State University, an NCAA Division I program in California. The Hornets compete in the Big West Conference. Freshman Cooper Perkinson will continue his intercollegiate golf career at Utah Tech University, an NCAA Division I program in St. George. The Trailblazers compete in the Western Athletic Conference.Freshman Dane Glesbrecht will continue his intercollegiate golf career at the University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada. The Cascades compete in the Canada West Conference of U Sports.Former Cougars Jack Taylor and Zane Aiken will also continue their intercollegiate careers at NCAA Division I programs this fall. Taylor spent the 2026 spring season at Kansas State University and will transfer to UNLV for the 2026-27 athletic season. The Rebels compete in the Mountain West Conference. Sophomore Bryan Lorenz of the #SMCC Baseball Team earned 2026 NJCAA Division II Second Team All-American honors after a sensational season for the Cougars. Lorenz, the ACCAC DII Player of the Year, appeared in 70 games and batted .405 with 78 runs, 111 hits, 21 doubles, five triples, nine home runs, 75 RBIs, 32 walks, and 14 stolen bases. He excelled at the 2026 NJCAA DII World Series, earning Offensive Player of the Tournament honors after batting .469 (15-for-32) over eight games, during which he recorded three doubles, one triple, three home runs, nine RBIs, five walks, two stolen bases, and 16 runs. Sophomore Sadie Su'a of @smcc_softball earned 2026 NJCAA Division II First Team All-American honors (UTIL) after a stellar season at the plate and in the circle for the Cougars. A dual-threat, Su'a appeared in 62 games as a sophomore and received ACCAC DII Player of the Year honors after batting .483 with 94 runs, 102 hits, 30 doubles, four triples, 15 home runs, 76 RBIs, 36 walks, and 26 stolen bases. In the circle, Su'a went 17-5 with seven saves, 160 strikeouts, a 2.42 ERA, and a 1.19 WHIP in 161.2 innings of work.Su'a received 2026 ACCAC DII Player of the Year honors, First Team All-ACCAC Division II honors, and First Team All-Region I Division II honors. Against NJCAA competition, Su'a tied for second in Division II in hits (100) and doubles (30). She ranked third in extra-base hits (48), sixth in runs (93), fifth in total bases (181), 17th in RBIs (75), and 14th in walks (36). As a pitcher, Su'a led all of NJCAA DII with her seven saves and tied for first in appearances (42). Su'a helped lead #SMCC to a 47-15 overall record in the 2026 season and a 35-7 mark in ACCAC DII play. The Cougars forced an if-necessary game in the Region I DII Championships at Pima CC before falling in extra innings. The #SMCC baseball team will hold open tryouts for the 2026-27 season to any and all interested 2025 and 2026 high school graduates on Friday, June 12 beginning at 8 a.m. at the SMCC Baseball Field.Any persons interested in participating in the tryouts must RSVP to SMCC assistant coach Kevin Soine at kevin.soine@southmountaincc.edu.Participants must bring their own equipment and a copy of a valid sports physical within the last 13 months.There is a $20 tryout fee. by @somtncougars
