The titles from Sondra Sherman’s series The Gemstone Apothecary read like instructions from a pharmacy:

Diazepam 120mg, Healing Stones 80mg
Bupropion 40mg, Healing Stones 40mg

But these prescriptions belong equally to the history of jewelry and the amulet. In the pendants, layered aluminum shapes abstracted from chemical diagrams of conventional psychopharmaca provide a symbolic framework for 'healing stones'. The positions and combinations of stones are unexpected, proposing questions or meanings beyond pure ornament or intrinsic value, and the pendants hang on suede near the throat in the manner of folkloric amulets.

Sherman began The Gemstone Apothecary during a residency in Idar-Oberstein, Germany, a city historically shaped by the gemstone industry. In local tourist shops, she encountered healing stones accompanied by elaborate “prescriptions” for their purported powers. The experience led her to consider two systems we often treat as oppositional: the rational language of science and medicine, and the emotional language of healing stones, amulets, and belief.

These necklaces do not offer gemstones as medical treatment. Instead, they look at the desire beneath both systems: the wish for relief, reassurance, meaning, and some measure of control.

Sherman allows those ways of understanding matter to coexist in a single object. The medication and the stones are each given a dose. Chemistry becomes ornament. The prescription becomes an amulet. As Sherman writes, she believes, at the very least, “in the hope that belief provides.”

Do you wear an object because of what it does or because of what you hope it might do?

Pleased to be part of this lineup of artists I admire thanks to Sienna. The works shown are new works in The Gemstone Apothecary series.
(about that music… I chose ambient music for one post and now ‘they’ sent me all sorts of lovely quirky things!)(I think the algorithm and I are having a moment)

A piece of jewelry or sculpture can preserve a gesture like a dance, transform matter like alchemy, and carry memory like an archive.

The Practice of Looking brings together six artists who begin with material - hair, wood, stone, metal, animal remains, and inherited objects - and allow larger questions to emerge. Their works touch on memory, ritual, belief, ecology, and transformation.

The exhibition draws loosely from two historical ways of understanding the material world. The alchemical idea of prima materia imagined an original substance from which transformation could emerge. The Doctrine of Signatures proposed that careful observation of nature might reveal hidden properties and relationships.

Whether or not we accept these ideas is beside the point. What remains compelling is their faith in attention: the possibility that knowledge begins by looking carefully.

Across the exhibition, materials are not treated as inert matter. They resist, retain histories, carry associations, and help determine what the work becomes. Each artist approaches this relationship differently. What becomes visible when we look closely? What can materials teach us when we begin treating them as collaborators?

With Melanie Bilenker, Luci Jockel, Steven KP, Sondra Sherman, Lori Talcott, and MJ Tyson.

SOUND ON _This was so lovely! In the garden, you wear special headphones that have some kind of transmitters that the music changes as you walk to different areas of the garden, mostly ambient music and some kind of chanting from composers like Brian Eno and sound collective, and at the small chapel it’s Patti Smith reading aloud a poem about the Pieta.

In Venice, the Giardino Mistico dei Carmelitani Scalzi _Behind its walls, the city’s breath slows, and light moves across herbs shaped by centuries of prayer. the Holy See Pavilion for Biennale Arte 2026 takes the form of a sonic prayer: The Ear Is the Eye of the Soul, inspired by the life and legacy of Saint Hildegard of Bingen.

In the Giardino Mistico, listening becomes central. New commissions by composers, musicians, poets and artists form a shared sonic composition, developed in collaboration with Soundwalk Collective. The garden contributes through an instrument translating plant bioelectric activity into sound.
At Santa Maria Ausiliatrice, the pavilion becomes a contemporary scriptorium and living archive, developed with Sister Maura Zátonyi OSB and the St. Hildegard Academy. Together, these sites invite silence, care and communal listening.

This pendant belongs to the body of work called ”The Gemstone Apothecary,” which weaves together themes of science, superstition, and the symbolic language of jewelry. The inspiration stems from a residency at Trier University Idar-Oberstein Campus. Immersed in the gemstone industry, which defines the city, Sondra Sherman sought to respond to the unique environment while continuing to explore her ongoing interest in “process as metaphor” and jewelry’s psychological and social roles. Though initially struggling to find a connection, she became intrigued by the healing stones sold in local tourist shops. Through this lens, the healing stones became a new symbol within the work. Tiger eye boosts confidence, courage, and personal power. It promotes protection and helps balance emotions, grounding the user.
