I wrote this song before she was born. But her presence has amplified the meaning of the song for me. She has since taken it and made it her own. She honours me by performing it in her own circles. Tonight I got to perform it together with her in public for the first time ever. It was even more meaningful to me that we got to do it on the @bluebirdcafetn stage. My songwriting home. Songs are beautiful magical things. They have the ability to do what we can’t do with mere words and actions. So for the first time ever I present Serena Alexander @serene.beane performing #Immigrant with her old man. Goodnight #Nashville. #bluebirdcafe #music taken in The Bluebird Cafe by @songsponge

We were always taught to keep our head down. Don’t make waves. Just make good grades. Make your family proud.

Last night, quietly in Manhattan, @masqueradenyc made history by featuring 3 Desi/South Asian actors in the lead roles of Christine, The Phantom and Raoul. For the first time. Anywhere.

@francesca.mehrotra who is also the first South Asian Christine Daae) @devenkolluri and
@samande_silva have performed (literally and figuratively) a cultural miracle.

Our daughter @serene.beane and her colleague @zi.alikhan were part of the magical team that helped bring this to life.

My grandparents and to some extent my parents, who grew up under British rule in Malaysia (then Malaya), never could have imagined this.

Nowhere in their conscious mind could they have ever imagined that there would be a time and place where one, let alone five people who shared their heritage, one of them a direct descendant of theirs, would ever bring anything like this to fruition.

Shout out to the producers of Masquerade for understanding that representation matters.

Today (yesterday in local time) Malaysia celebrates 69 years of independence from British rule. Merdeka!

Just like @wbsa22 and I, my daughter‘s ancestors would be proud. taken in New York City by @songsponge

❗️Stunning @clairekellymusic review by Peter Blackstock @blackstocksandiego at @nodepression.

I’m so lucky that I get to live in the Claire Kelly universe. I mean that in the most sincere way possible. In a town full of warm, wonderful people she might be the warmest.

She most definitely is of the most gifted young songwriters I know. She’s really good at collecting songs out of the ether. But where she really shines, which might be the reason she was put on this earth, is that she collects people the way others may collect precious gems. She then carries and nurtures them and gives them a special place in her heart.

It might be the reason why The Country Music Hall of Fame has her running their songwriting program for young people. Because when you’re with Claire, you are safe. Safe to tell your secret-est story in song.

Then there’s *that* VOICE. The voice that lives in service for all the amazing songs that she creates in community and by herself. Everything from “Drunk Girls” to “Paris” (Oh my God, Paris…) to “Holy Cowboy” to “Be Careful Who You Kiss in Nashville” would be lifeless without her voice.

It’s why Brandon Bell @mixerbell said yes when we asked him to help birth this project.

And what a joyous project it is! So many incredible contributions from the band on this record: @lukesandsbass
@kaylalundenmusic @themichaelpaulmurphy
@bosschopsmusic @bobbyfrankdrums
@adamollendorff @joncavendish 🤘✨

Claire has had to work really hard to get the word out. Nashville is a great place to come be a creative. But it’s also one of the most challenging places for visibility. And sometimes there are obstacles and gatekeepers - just because.🤷🏾‍♂️

It’s telling that Peter Blackstock from No Depression “found” her and the band in Appleton, Wisconsin at Mile of Music. Because the music writers in Nashville are just buried and only have so much bandwidth to discover something new. 1/2 taken in Nashville, Tennessee by @songsponge
