Next radio broadcast is tomorrow (Tuesday) night at 8pm PST (instead of the usually Wednesday night show). Streaming only on @bedcrumbshow 📡📻👂🏼

For this episode of Sonic Gnostic Research I’ll be journeying through a crate of impactful records released last year. 2025 felt like a decade, and I barely scratched the surface of all the transcendent music that emerged. Yet when I reflected back I was surprised to realize how many records made an immediate impact. Only time will tell their deeper effects ➰

In a culture being flattened by algorithmically curated hellscapes, I’m deeply grateful for the beautifully resistant ecosystem of community radio📻 🖤♾️

Been working on adding more Sonic Gnostic Research radio shows to the @bedcrumbshow archives 🎧🧙🏼‍♂️📚

Unlike the last couple of conversation-oriented episodes, this episode is 100% vinyl MUSIC ONLY. When it was originally broadcast in September ‘24, this nearly 3 hour tracklist was spontaneously chosen one slab at a time; a winding sonic journey that reveals a different theme and story with each listen.

Surreal Americana, deconstructed post rock, and other moody, hypnotic syntheses make up the first hour, before blasting off into kosmische explorations, motorik polyrhythms, and progressive pop. The second half of the mix ventures into darker, confrontational territory, featuring Rock in Opposition pioneers Henry Cow and Art Zoyd, as well as more current avant-rock practitioners from Belgium, Montreal, Afghanistan and the UK. To close things up, it felt right to end with an enveloping drone performance from Tony Conrad, Arnold Dreyblatt and Jim O’Rourke—3 generations of avant garde pioneers resonating together through the ages.

Listen to the full mix in the bedcrumbshow archives. For further research into this crate of LPs and more, dig in at nofoodjustwax.com

Next radio show is Wednesday (tomorrow) night, live at @digitaldebrisvideogallery in Los Angeles, as part of a community radio event presented by @bedcrumbshow. I’ll be spinning vinyl from 7-8pm, followed by multi-media sets by @keanubeausier & @hpymntn @postfemale. Attend in person, or tune into the live broadcast at Bedcrumbshow.com🌀📺 📻 📡

For this episode of Sonic Gnostic Research, I’ll be selecting a crate of deep cuts from the rich catalogue of my favorite record label, Constellation Records.

Arising from a state of urban decay, affordable loft spaces, and a strong creative community in Montreal’s Mile End neighborhood in the 1990s, Constellation Records has managed to uphold their leftist principles, innovative aesthetic, worker solidarity, and financial sustainability for the last 3 decades. While tangential listeners probably know the label for Godspeed You! Black Emperor or being associated with the nebulous early waves of post-rock, all eras of Constellation’s catalogue are saturated with fresh and deconstructed approaches to an expansive “constellation” of styles—from chamber punk to avant-jazz, electroacoustic folk, experimental electronics, post-minimalism, sound collage, ambient pop and slowcore singer/songwriters. Despite their seemingly disparate sounds, these records all manage to feel connected, not only because many were recorded on the same analogue tape machine at Hotel2Tango, but through the shared labor and deep camaraderie of the producers, musicians, and visual artists in the community.

For these reasons & more, I’ve consistently appreciated the inspiring care & quality that goes into not only the music they release, but their principles, business practices, and respect for artists, not to mention the art & packaging of the physical media—their sleeves & inserts typically appear meticulously handcrafted, often screenprinted or embossed, from economic, recycled materials. Over the last 15 years I’ve devotedly managed to accumulate over 100 of their 187+ releases, thanks to their anti-scalper mission of keeping all of their LPs perpetually affordable and in print.

this upcoming wednesday we’re doing a live broadcast from @digitaldebrisvideogallery

——————

line up:

Sonic Gnostic Research -
The vinyl-focused programming of Sonic Gnostic Research spans genres, eras, and vibes, with a particular love for outsider sounds of the free, mystical, cosmic, and progressive varieties. Each broadcast finds new ways to weave these threads together through differing moods, scenes, themes, and styles. Your host, Ash, is a disciple to the vibrational essence of the universe, devoted to their tangled rituals of improvisation, music, research, and deep listening. As an attempt to constellate the dots between their poly-directional interests, they’ve been archiving their record library, writing, mixtapes and virtual crates over at their blog, Nofoodjustwax.com @sonicgnostic

KEANU -
Bay Area born and K-Town Resident, KEANU is a multifaceted artist and an alchemist in lyricism and sounds. Their set revolves around their upcoming project “everything is a halo”
@keanubeausier

divining through disorientation -
how might we navigate through the indeterminate pluriverse? when desirable latent futures seem frustratingly out of reach, what wavelengths of possibility can we brocade to summon the worlds of our desires?

c+ and mountain of happiness invite the world to make its curiosities known through divinatory process- seeking fugitive understandings to attune to through surrender to and play with disorientation

Been dusting off a few choice radio episodes & vinyl mixes from the @bedcrumbshow archives. Originally broadcasting in August of last year, this 2-hour episode finds co-hosts @ellen.schloff & @_ash.ing trading pairs of LP selections from the NoFoodJustWax record collection, starting with Don Cherry’s Summer House Sessions. The vibrant sounds of organic music lead us down a spiraling path of cosmic love songs, poetry recitation, and reflective conversations about sonically generated micro-utopias.

A flight detour lead to a spontaneous afternoon in Grand Rapids, MI where I stumbled on a rad shop called @blackdogbooksandrecords. They had a great selection of used books that seemed to gravitate around philosophy, art, poetry and radical leftist/feminist/Black/Queer/Indigenous politics.

A few days later in the cottage town of Petoskey, MI, I returned to a small but really well-curated upstairs shop called @hexagonrecord where I filled some heavy gaps in my ECM collection.

Every time I go to Seattle, I gotta hit the great Neptune Music Company… a magical basement stacked with almost every media type I can think of: vinyl, books, CDs, tapes, dvds, vhs, laser discs, etc. I usually spend hours digging in there, and this time I came up with a heavy clutch of loft jazz and British folk, filling some big gaps in my Bruce Cockburn, Richard Thompson, David Murray and John Renbourn collections.

Also stoked to hear this live Blood Ulmer record with Mats Gustafsson & Paal Nilssen-Love and dig into these traditional folk albums by Ewan Maccol, Peggy Seeger & Gordon Bok.

FREE MUSIC SOCIETIES with guest Brent Vallefuoco [Sonic Gnostic Radio]

This radio broadcast from February 2024 on @bedcrumbshow is now up in the archives 🌀📡🌀📻🌀👂🏼🌀

Last year, Brent Vallefuoco took a road trip the Sonic Gnostic trailer out in Joshua Tree to broadcast one of the most fun and freeform live radio shows we’ve ever done—an organic flow of improv LPs, inquisitive discussions, and an on-air duo improvisation. Brent shares about his recent deep dive into the music and lore of Los Angeles Free Music Society, spinning records by LAFMS, Le Forte Four, and Smegma. Naturally this leads into us reflecting on our personal experiences of the LA Free Music continuum in the present day. After listening to some free space music from our friends Ham Scholar and the Institute for Quantum Music Quantum Research, we performed an on-air improvisation. involving oscillator, autoharp, a beer can, and a lot of echo. For the final portion of the show, Brent discusses the cathartic creation of his album, At Last I Accept the End of All That I Held Dear, focusing on the track “6.22.22” which was recorded out here in the high desert.

Since this episode went so many places, I made an episode timeline for listeners to jump to any segment

Re\/Rooting Rituals:: Vinyl mixtape & liner notes

Typically these radio shows are completely improvised, a race against the needle to pull the next record off the shelves, without a concept in mind. And yet when I listen back, there are always thematic threads that reveal themselves. I’ve returned to this particular mix from March 2024 frequently, listening either as a meditation or as a multi-directional launch point for research, allowing me to learn about the ideas, folklore, stories and mythologies that inspire this music. Each artist draws from the embodied knowledge of their own cultural history, bodily memory, and improvisational instincts to perform distinct sonic ceremonies, opening up doorways for the unknown in the process. Rooted in primordial and ancestral energies, these sonic ritual assemblages channel transformational, empowering and healing vibrations through the air, planting seeds for an inter-relational, post-colonial future.

Vibrational Emergences is a rambling new music journal attempting to interweave the scattered threads of my listening habits and media consumption, hopefully connecting the most resonant vibrations with curious ears in the process.

For the first edition I really wanted to give myself the freedom to see where the writing took me, and ended up with over 3000 words of what my friend called “a verbal mixtape”. I recount a week in February where I got sucked into a British folk vortex while reading the magical book Electric Eden by Rob Young, re-listening to a lot of COB, Pentangle and Incredible String Band. I also share of my favorite folky guitar heroes like Robbie basho, JJ Cale, and Michael Chapman, and review albums by Xylouris White, Isotope 217, and Alasdair Roberts.
