Did something fun today and recorded my #NewsforNormies newsletter as a podcast, with a guest! @one_burgh — thank you for cohosting!

We covered the three big stories then ended up talking about a ton more. Here’s a clip, and you can check out the whole episode linked in Stories.

#France— what’s happening, and why you should care.

As always, where you get your news matters just as much as what exactly you’re reading. You tell me, is this a story you’re following? And what do you think about what’s happening? by @sonniabatta

I spend way too much time thinking not only about what’s happening in the world, but also how we discuss what’s happening. The sources we get our information from, the commentators that we follow, and the impact of the constant stream of information we are exposed to.

A while back on Substack I posted a piece critical of the, what I call, “Just Asking Questions” crowd. And today I heard someone make a statement that really encapsulates exactly what I believe in regards to this faction of media.

i’d love to hear your thoughts on this one, and specifically what you do to understand news when it comes through ideological perspectives. How do you filter out opinion? What questions are you asking yourself to make sure you’re seeing through opinion and unnecessary critique?

How quickly do we form opinions? Why do we gravitate toward certainty and outrage over nuance? And what are some questions you can ask yourself when processing difficult stories like the #Cornell U story to make sure that you’re getting an entire set of facts?

After spending 20+ years in the world of journalism, these are some of the things that I make sure to ask myself when trying to process a complicated story like this one.

Would love to hear your thoughts on the coverage you’re seeing, and how you keep yourself sane during intense media coverage of stories like this. by @sonniabatta

One more trip around the sun! Every year I’m more grateful for this life and all my people in it. I used to think it was cheesy to celebrate birthdays too loudly but now I know what a gift every day, and every year, is. 💗 by @sonniabatta

You know something that makes you actually appreciate the necessary complexities of our legal system? Talking to an actual LAWYER.

Orlando-based trial attorney Whitney Boan has a gift of being able to make the details seem simple, and she shared her expertise with me last week in discussing the #LindsayClancy mistrial.

What could be next? Is another trial even likely? What did the defense and state do right, and what could they have improved on? And as we talk about in this clip, why the “hormone precedent” you hear people discussing all over social media might not hold.

The episode is up and linked in Stories. I hope you listen and bring your desire for nuance and complexity. by @sonniabatta

Within 17 minutes, the world we understood disappeared. And in the 25 years since, I’ve thought a lot about what that day did to my generation, what the years that followed did to our country, and what we may have lost along the way.

This piece is both as well as something bigger—whether we still believe as fiercely in the values we once understood were worth defending.
