White Picket Chair (2026). The components that make up the chair are the same modular, mass-manufactured parts that make up the fences and the railings. While the chair’s decorative finials and arched, emblemed rails resemble the familiar fence, the additional posts at the front and ribbed tubes connecting to the back add unlikely dimensionality.

White Picket Chair (2026). Assembled from the flashy, ready-made stainless steel components found on the fences and gates across New York City’s Asian and West Indian neighborhoods, White Picket Chair challenges the idyllic image of the “American Dream” from an immigrant perspective.

One of our ‘Up In Smoke’ alumni @sonny.han recently released the second version of the ‘The White Picket chair’ series, inspired by the stainless steel fences and gates found throughout New York City’s Asian and West Indian neighborhoods. the White Picket Chair series challenges the idyllic notion of the “American Dream” from an immigrant’s perspective. These architectural elements first emerged in China in the 1980s, then quickly spread to neighboring countries before arriving in New York City, where they became iconic features of many immigrant neighborhoods. Assembled from the same polished stainless steel components used in these architectural elements, White Picket Chair 1.0 and 2.0 combine the iconic fence with the quintessential form of a simple chair. Its second iteration, 2.0, draws from the artist’s own experience with these same components, where tightly spaced vertical spindles form the gates of many homes on residential streets in Korea.

Chair 1.0 and 2.0 are available for purchase online and during showroom hours at our Ridgewood location. by @sonny.han

Han “Sonny” Seungmin is a Korean furniture and object artist based in Brooklyn. His practice draws from the everyday—childhood memories, inherited rituals, the overlooked textures of the built environment—and reshapes them into sculptural furniture. For Han,
furniture is both medium and message: not necessarily a study in comfort, but a vessel for narrative. Familiar forms are pushed toward the unfamiliar, asking what a chair or a table can hold besides its function.

For NYCxDESIGN @nycxdesign this year, I was incredibly honored to be included as one of the new voices in New York alongside ten other amazing artists and designers on the official guide, GRID.

Thank you for taking interest in my work, putting everything together, and allowing me to share with more folks @ben_dreith @eeelleneee.

I've had so much fun sharing my work this month at various shows alongside so many exceptional artists and designers. You can still come check out some of my things at @allenstreetgallery until June 16th, and a preview of some new stuff at 35 Allen St with @oneofone.works.

OneOfOne presents a preview of Bu Tables by Han Seungmin (@sonny.han).

Han Seungmin is a Brooklyn-based artist and designer known for the White Picket Chair — a seat built from the mass-produced stainless steel fencing found outside immigrant households across New York City. His practice draws from the overlooked materials and visual languages of everyday urban life, reconfiguring them into objects that exist in the tension between the familiar and the strange.

To close out NYCxDesign, we are presenting an unreleased preview of his Bu Tables at 35 Allen Street in Bowery — a satellite exhibition inside UU creative space (@uubyunisecon), powered by UNISECON (@unisecongarments). On view this week and next.

Thank you for the overwhelming support at our open house this past weekend. Our doors reopen Sundays starting May 31st. Book your visit via link in bio 🔗

Sometimes safety is physical. Sometimes it’s emotional, cultural, spiritual, or shaped by memory, ritual, and repetition.

Meet the final six architect-makers in Safe & Sound — our @nycxdesign exhibition with @leroystreetstudio exploring refuge through furniture, photography, sculpture, and domestic objects:

▸ Randy Armas Moreno (@r.armas.art), using polaroid photography as an act of grounding, self-love, and resistance during moments of uncertainty and unrest.

▸ Rohan Cherayil (@rjcherayil), drawing from Indian miniature traditions to explore home as something carried through stories, memory, and migration.

▸ Stephen Muir, merging the comfort of a bed with the structure of a chair to create a place of softness, support, and rest.

▸ Han Seungmin (@sonny.han), transforming the iconic stainless steel fences of immigrant New York neighborhoods into furniture that questions safety, aspiration, and belonging.

▸ Vanessa Tai (@__lintel__), hand-stitching leather vessels that hold personal objects while reflecting on the difference between “home” and “house.”

▸ Yinqing Zhu (@itch_chin), reimagining Chinese ceramic traditions through digitally embossed metal forms where ornament becomes protective structure.
