this is a kind of tactile spectrogram honouring non-human voices of the land and water as they exist in my childhood memory [mostly through screens], as they exist in the memory of rock [in fossil form], as they exist in the memory of glacial ice, as they exist in the emotion of this photo taken when i was 6 years old. i have returned often to this spot in jasper national park over the years. made for a project with the great vocal improviser @sopranoise in mind. taken in Native Land by @sopranoise

Sarah Albu and I had a dream of a photoshoot last month!

She had wanted “bold, in your face, atypical for opera” in her roles as performer and producer (among many hats!), and we zeroed in on some pretty cool choices for clothing, makeup, and fun accessories that she had brought. We very much were in a “yes, and” kinda flow.

Some of the intensity was brought to you by AFI and Meshuggah blasting in the background as we worked. But we started gently with ambient NIN.

Sarah’s got a performance energy and presence like no other and is probably the person who has most made me feel fear in a live performance—but she can also make you LMAO/LYAO.

On my side, it was great to play with natural / editorial light and approaches, experimenting with in-camera multi-exposures, and dialing in a fashion lighting setup with two lights, a subtle gel, reflector and the trusty homemade v-flats as negative fill contour.

These are some of my favorite photos from our session. It’s been cool to see one out in the wild for Chants Libres’ Oper’Actuel—Sarah is the master-producer and a performer and it’s such a great vibe of community. I’m happy to have some bits of bass-ing in that too.

I’m so glad to have assisted Sarah in having images for the future. We’ve known each other for about half a lifetime and have many stories and inside jokes. It was beautiful to see how that rapport translated in the photoshoot 🦑☺️

A tribute concert happening in Montreal this week will feature music by David Bowie, Grace Jones, Nina Hagen and Klaus Nomi — along with Beethoven, Richard Strauss, Michael Nyman and more.

Autour de la Flute’s Re/Unification show has a diverse setlist combining rock, pop, new wave and post-punk songs with works by classical and contemporary composers to evoke the socio-political tensions of the 1980s.

The performance will take place at Jeunesses Musicales du Canada (305 Mont-Royal E.) on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 7:30 p.m.
