Have you ever wondered how to make a pattern repeat?

This little trick makes it SO much easier to understand

𖦹 Take 4 equal-sized squares of paper and arrange them into a larger square.

𖦹 Start drawing in the middle, where all 4 pieces meet. Keep your drawing away from the outside edges.

𖦹 Swap the left two pieces with the right two pieces. You’ll have a new empty space in the middle. Keep drawing!

𖦹 Now swap the top two pieces with the bottom two pieces and fill in the middle again.

𖦹 Repeat the swaps and keep adding to your design until you’re happy with it.

Extra tip: I like to flip it all upside down occasionally so that the print looks good and repeats nicely in both directions

And there you have it! A repeat pattern (hope that all makes sense)

Save this one for your next creative afternoon

The messy middle. When you’re not sure what you’re making, where it’s going, or whether you’ve completely ruined it.
So you keep going. Moving things around, adding, taking away, sitting with the uncertainty and hoping it starts to make sense.
Maybe that’s where the magic happens. Somewhere between what if this doesn’t work? and let’s see what happens by @soren.in.studio

Girl, where you been? Valid question tbh.
I’ve been a little MIA around here, but not because I haven’t been doing anything. Quite the opposite, actually.
There’s been lots of making, designing, family-ing and general life-ing. It’s been messy and beautiful.

So, consider this a little hello, a little update, and hopefully the start of sharing a bit more of what’s going on around here. by @soren.in.studio

How long until I make an irreversible mistake? 🙈
So far, so good… but it feels inevitable I’ll add something I regret.
The rules are simple: grab an old pair of jeans ✔️skip the pencil sketch, and just draw straight onto the fabric✔️ hoping for the best.
It’s just a fun creative exercise!
Worst case? I mess them up and still have a quirky pair of jeans.
I wasn’t 100% sure if I’d pull off drawing the butterfly - anything symmetrical feels risky when you don’t plan ahead 😬 But it actually turned out really pretty.
For now, I’m keeping it simple with just black ink. Thinking maybe I’ll branch out into colour on another piece
