It has been a month since ANNEALING opened, and I am only now ready to speak about it. The work was complete before I was ready to explain it. After months of building, rebuilding, I needed some distance between the making and the remembering. ANNEALING reflects on what happens after pressure, rupture, and change—what remains, what strengthens, and what we carry forward. I have shared very little because I want the work to be experienced in person. ANNEALING remains on view through Friday, December 4. If you have been meaning to see it, go stand with it. The Architecture of Being Seen I almost did not post this. Not because I doubted the work, but because it is not the standard practice of Soren Studio, and I wanted to protect that. In collaboration with the Brooks, I created the centerpiece for their Met Gala Watch Party, answering this year's theme, "Costume Art, Fashion Is Art." And that is the question I kept returning to. If fashion is art, then what is a garment really doing? It is not decoration. It is composition. A garment holds line and weight and color the way a painting does, only it moves, only it breathes, only it becomes part of the person wearing it. Art you can stand inside. So I built two figures. Two truths. Because a woman is never only one thing. One crowned in gold and roses, rising out of a garden. One wrapped in emerald and soft ivory, quiet and modern and turned slightly away. One from history. One from now. Both of them art. Both of them true. For me, art and fashion have never been separate. They have always lived in the same room, spoken the same language, shaped each other. And some time ago, before Soren Studio, I also worked in costume, with fabric in my hands, learning how a garment can build a character before a word is spoken. That chapter never left me. This project invited it back into the room. None of this would have taken shape without art consultant @khara.woods who I collaborate with often and trust deeply and @upholsteredstudio, who translated it into cloth. I asked for something both abstract and literal. Upholstered Studio made it real. I was stretched. I was excited. I made something I am proud of. So here they are. Both of them. Both true. The surface begins as an accumulation of material events. Coffee is reduced to pigment and worked into the drop cloth through staining, saturation, abrasion, and repeated handling. The process is allowed to remain visible, it shifts in value, torn fibers, residue, and irregularities enter the material language rather than being concealed by it. The scroll develops through this negotiation between cloth and intervention, its surface an index of heat, pressure, absorption, and time.
