Artist intro! Hi my name is Mari and I’m a mixed media embroidery artist. Finding embroidery felt like tapping into the long cosmic thread that connected past to present, human to human, soul to nature. The art I make ties together everything I have loved since childhood: craft, experimentation, color, mixing media, clothing. It is a tactile jubilee. A nature-fueled bacchanal. THE WOODS ARE ALIVE is my latest upcycled collection featuring many of my favorite friends from the woods. The line debuted last Saturday at queer holiday market hosted by @prideandpetalsshop!!! Thanks to everyone who rolled out to support a small business! It’s a one-human shop but really, it takes a whole interconnected forest of magical cuties to make the magic happen. Joy feels in short order these days so I’m sharing a project that filled me with oceans of joy. The @berkeleypubliclibrary had a fiber mascot competition in June and one morning I woke up with a design in my head (scroll to the end to see it) and a fervor in my heart. So I spent probably somewhere around 40 hours making my beloved library monster 🥲 she is hand sewn with secondhand fabric, her eyes are handmade sculpey clay buttons, her mouth is hand stitched and her tongue is stuffed with reused bra padding 😜, her books are HANDBOUND with secondhand leather scraps and each one features a quote from an author who has lived in Berkeley or is writing about Berkeley. I loved every minute of creating this little joyful tentacled freak and I hope you enjoy seeing all her glorious angles!!!!!! You can vote for her to win an award from the contest!
