COVID-19 has created a huge hole in the Seattle budget, and City Council is holding budget hearings now to approve a new budget for the rest of 2020.

We know that real health and safety means less money for Seattle Police Department and more money for community. The uprising in defense of Black lives has built incredible pressure for city officials to act.

Building on this movement, this morning Decriminalize Seattle and King County Equity Now (@kingcountyequitynow) will be presenting a plan for 50% cuts to SPD’s remaining 2020 budget, with reinvestments proposed in four categories (described in more detail below):
•Replace current 911 operations with a civilian-controlled system
•Scale up community-led solutions
•Fund a community-created roadmap to life without policing
•Invest in housing for all

Read on and join today’s 10am budget hearing to find out (Wednesday, 7/8 at 10am):‬
