I’m honored to share that I’ve been appointed Professor of Fine Arts and Director of the Fine Arts Program at The American University of Rome, beginning this January.

After three incredible years at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University, it’s a real privilege to take on this role — one that offers a meaningful opportunity to deepen AUR’s commitment to global art dialogue, interdisciplinary practice, and community engagement.

Grateful to join a community whose vision reminds us that our time is now.

Drawing from philosopher Georgio Agamben's notion of Bare Life, I seek to depict life exposed to sovereign power, stripped of rights and protections, laid bare in its rawest form. by @souledeesse

I have also created some woodcut prints depicting pure joy in contrast to the scream of despair. They capture the sensation of the landscape becoming a part of your skin, almost imperceptibly. by @souledeesse

These landscapes aren't merely decorative; they symbolize the deep connection between our inner turmoil and the world around us. by @souledeesse

I was honored to present my new series of woodcut prints today at the Southern Graphic Conference (SGCI), titled The Silent Scream. May we bridge the gap between the seen and the unseen, the heard and the unheard, and ultimately, find comfort in the shared language of the soul. by @souledeesse

Aphrocene Project: Witness the intersection of art and ecology with my trio of clay vessels. Sculpted to resemble human faces, these vessels embrace soil harvested from Italy's volcanic terrains—a landscape now serving as a refuge for African immigrants. by @souledeesse

Aphrocene... by @souledeesse

From Bogliasco to Roma, spending time at c.r.e.t.a. rome creating the first installation of the New Pantheon, Aphrocene, the birth of the twelve deities. In Aphrocene, nine sculptures representing fertility are modeled in clay and adorned with reclaimed afro-hair. In contrast, underneath, three clay vessels in the shape of human heads carry the soil of the native landscape, and an intersex herm watches over it all. Thank you, c.r.e.t.a. rome, for the space and time to dream and make the possibilities. by @souledeesse

I was a Bogliasco Fellow for April and May. It was a great honor—I have so many ideas to fill me for the rest of the year! Thank you so much, Bogliasco Foundation! by @souledeesse

Hermafrodek is alive! A performance by Soulé Déesse aiming to merge performance, film, sculptural installation, and theater together to produce a unique kind of spectacle and immersive experience. by @souledeesse

Hermafrodek—an immersive art experience. It’s out of this universe… by @souledeesse

I have a wall installation at the Katonah Museum of Art: Cladogram runs from July 11 – September 19. Works selected by Yasmeen Siddiqui.

About the wall installation:
All the pieces that you see on the wall in front of you are memories of conversations I had with my grandmother, growing up in Haiti under the infamous Duvalier’s dictatorship. My granmé, as I called her, was a vodou priestess from Cotonou, Benin. When I was a small child, we would sit at the table, and my granmé would give me instructions on how to move an object across the table: she could move all kind of objects with her mind—what people in the West call, as I now know, telekinesis. My wall installation Hermafrodek is a giant experiment in human telekinesis, moving humans across the wide gaps that separate them in the spirit of my granmé. I want to bring the viewers closer to understanding each other, stepping out of their space and entering another universe. Who can really tell in the end whether it is mine or yours? by @souledeesse
