POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
A unique/experimental meditation on the connection between black history and the color blue. I first heard of this book through an interview with the author on NPR’s Book of the Day podcast and the focus was so niche, so very personal, that my curiosity was piqued and I bought the book immediately.

Very excited to proceed on this journey in what has thus far been an exceptionally well written (in some moments, probably audacious) examination of family, spirituality, culture and the parallel of a recurrent, relentless color. by @soulsticekn

Re-reading Circe has been nothing but an absolute comfort. Recently, I’ve taken pleasure in picking up the books that I haven’t touched in years and discovering details and feelings that I missed my first go-round.

I’m very fascinated when authors reimagine myths and legends. It’s a niche of writing that I enjoy, especially when they’re able to blend in a twist of modern sensibility, and *especially* with Madeline Miller’s shining skills as a storyteller.

This book reads like an epic, taking you on a millennia-long excavation into the thickness of solitude and self. Circe is a goddess, yes, but, still is even more than that - she is a woman discovering what it means to become. We bear witness through her many phases - a lover, a witch, an outcast, a mother. We feel her grappling with conflict and traversing through the nuance of emotion and circumstance. At some point, Circe becomes someone you can empathize with, maybe even see yourself in.

My favorite part, I think, is the gentleness and matter of fact tone that Miller uses. It feels tenderly poetic and retrospective and adds a sense of peace and acceptance that brushes firmly against the insistent patriarchy, hubris and endless chaos that Circe must endure.

Miller spent her creative liberties well and really breathed new life into this story without losing the basic essence of Circe’s mythology. I think this has become a book that I will crave and reach for again and again. by @soulsticekn

Just started on the final installment of this trilogy and currently having very mixed feelings about its progress. Nevertheless, I’m keen to see the saga through to the end. by @soulsticekn

Making my way through Kei Miller’s collection of essays, “Things I Have Withheld” and I must say I’m quite enjoying this one.

Although Miller explores some pretty big social issues all throughout, he does it with a sense of intimacy that makes each “study” surprisingly refreshing. It feels as though you’re observing while still actively participating.

So far, I’ve had to pause reading several times and exclaim a contemplative “hm” because this sense of deep diving into the uncharted terrain of silence and all the unspoken, under-acknowledged things that we keep packed away there is so revelatory and thought-provoking that I’ve had to make space for things to sink in.

This is a solid read especially if you’re into essays and non-fiction. by @soulsticekn

Currently enjoying ‘How To Say Babylon’. I love that Sinclair’s writing is so artful and so intentional that even a memoir reads like the most beautiful poetry. by @soulsticekn

Leone Ross broke the hiatus. I’m quite shocked if I’m being honest because when I started this read, I wasn’t sure that I’d actually finish. This One Sky Day is singlehandedly one of the strangest, most imaginative, most original books I’ve ever read. That curiousness is what kept me going, but then the preciseness of the prose? The nuance submerged me.

Reading this was like digesting a West Indian love story on acid with so many moving parts, parallels, layers and so much (SO MUCH) magic. I felt like Ross’ writing led me on a long leash, allowing me to roam deeper into the thickness of the story. She’d lose me, but then just as quickly whip me back to where I needed to be.

This story was grand - much larger than the average mind can conjure or conceive. It is thickly woven poetry with a loosely formed plot that makes it just perfect. Honestly, I don’t know that any description can do it justice; it’s something worth experiencing. It is strange and unique and authentic, and most of all very warm for all of its eccentricities.

This book is a pleasure-scape. It is filled with so much to drink in and I had a grand time. It left me feeling well fed and quite nourished.

Butter Honey Pig Bread is one of those books that you experience differently, if you know what I mean. There is no fanfare, no excessive bells and whistles, it just is. It first captures you with its thick, rich, flavorsome writing. It asks you kindly to sit as it nourishes you with the turn of each page, and before you know it - you are in love. This book is like a decadent portal, transporting you through time, space, hurt and healing. It is a sensory pleasure, peppering you with generous pinches of lust and indulgence - encouraging you to relish it, to go along with it.

This book left me basking in the satisfied afterglow that comes with completing a sumptuous read, or an extremely delicious meal (what’s the difference? A good read is as a good meal). It is about enjoyment, and not enjoyment in the obvious sense, but enjoyment of the nuance that is bitter and sweet. It is an interestingly fractured story about grief, about healing and homes, about love and pain and passion. It is raw and potently feminine. I say read it! Devour it. Savor it.

So I kicked off the summer with this one and I couldn’t wait. I’d been eager for its release ever since its announcement, especially after Emezi said it would be a romance novel. Romance is definitely a “deviation” from their usual works, but (to no one’s surprise) they shifted gears into the genre immaculately. I think this book is lovely. It’s surprisingly light (given that it brushes on a few heavy themes), it’s vibrant - it reminds me of champagne bubbles (if that makes sense lol). It is freeing and chaotic. I *love* the fact that it toggles between Brooklyn and an unnamed Caribbean island because the shifting scenery (and the author’s vivid description of same) also adds a special zing to di ting.

In true Emezi fashion, the story for all its fun, still manages to be human and relatable and to carve out a space to just exist and be - a space for emotions and the undeniable depth that accompany to unfurl. This book reminds us that life and romantic love are beautifully messy. That grief and grieving is not a linear process but that grief is just love in mourning. That love itself is, has been, and always will be, dynamic.

If I had to rate it, I’d say 4 out of 5 because I really wanted *more* but that aside, if you’re looking for a zesty summer read - get into it.

P.s. I’m going to need a detailed epilogue of Alim and Feyi just ✨living life✨ in art and love and good food🤌🏾.
