This is the stage before crawling.

You do not have to wait for them to move across the room to start supporting it โ€” once your baby has the neck and core strength to stay engaged during floor time you can begin. That can be as early as 4 months and it is also great for Moro reflex development.

And it is not about drills. It is about interaction. You follow their movement, they respond to you. They reach, you pause. You move, they adjust.

That back and forth is how their brain starts organizing both movement and communication at the same time.

During play like this they are practicing pushing into their arms, shifting their weight, reaching and rebalancing, and learning how their body moves in space.

Fun brain fact ๐Ÿคฏ The rocking and side to side shifting used in crawling connects the left and right sides of the brain. Later on that same coordination helps with tracking across a page, keeping place while reading, and using the eyes together smoothly.

You may also notice sleep gets a little messy here. More wake ups. More movement. Harder settling.

That is not regression โ€” that is learning. Their brain is busy organizing new movement patterns and sleep is where it processes them. Sometimes sleep takes a small step back while development takes a big step forward.

Stay consistent during this phase. It is tempting to go back to old habits just to get everyone through the night but this is actually a learning opportunity.

Progress does not always look restful in the moment but it is often a sign you are moving in the right direction.

The milestone starts before the movement.

3 safe inversions you can start from newborn ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ

Vestibular input is one of the most underrated tools we have for brain development, sleep, and regulation.

Our bodies are built for movement โ€” and this is one of the simplest ways to give your babyโ€™s nervous system what itโ€™s asking for.

A few things to know before you try:

Donโ€™t be surprised if they hate it the first few times. Thatโ€™s a completely normal human response to something new. We are not wired to love everything on the first try โ€” or even the third. Reduce the time, but keep introducing it 1-2x a day.

Timing matters too. I aim for about 45 minutes before a nap or bedtime โ€” enough time for another feed or to start a wind-down routine after. You also want to avoid a super full belly.

My second born is a reflux baby. It didnโ€™t stop us โ€” heโ€™d spit up and weโ€™d just let it be what it is. The goal is to be present with them. Fun. Safe. Connected.

Give these a try and let me know how it goes. And if you want to see more, drop FLIP in the comments and I'll send you more ways to build vestibular input into your daily routine inside Sound Sleepers.

Cheers to sleep ๐Ÿค

Might as well be at different restaurants. ๐Ÿ˜‚

The goal is simple โ€” eat as fast as humanly possible before the clock runs out.

Why is this such a reality for so many of us? ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ

FOMO babies can absolutely nap in public โ€” it just looks a little different than you planned.

This nap was 45 minutes. At home he sleeps 2 hours or more. And that is okay โ€” this is what we plan for. A later start to the day and an earlier bedtime balances it out and we keep moving.

You do not have to put your life on hold for your childโ€™s sleep โ€” but you do have to learn it, understand it, and respect it. Then make it work for everyone.

What do public naps look like for you? Drop it below ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ

How many stops did we make. ๐Ÿ˜…

This should have been a 4.5 hours drive. 1 and 3yr old passengers. One year old did not appreciate a single minute of the drive.

We left early to make it a drive day and honestly that was the right call. Built in buffer for the chaos and we needed every bit of it.

Playgrounds are always the move on road trips with littles. Get them moving, burn some energy, and the next stretch goes so much smoother.

The 1 year old had exactly one quiet moment โ€” his 50 minute nap. We do not take that for granted. ๐Ÿ˜‚

What are your road trip survival tips with little ones? Drop them below ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ

โ€œI gave my sick child extra daytime sleep and now their nights are broken โ€” so I just keep the daytime sleep heavy.โ€

Comment SLEEP to join my live Q&A tomorrow through Sound Sleepers.

This is one of the more common things I see happen. Sick sleep is bonus sleep. Your child needs that extra rest while their body is in recovery โ€” add to the daytime, bring bedtime earlier, and the night stays balanced.

On the rebound, energy kicks back up. Maybe they start to fight the earlier nap. Maybe they push their times back out to match their established schedule. Or they take the daytime sleep and the night becomes broken.

All signs they are recovered. Time to move back to schedule.

If you are dealing with sickness or you fell into this cycle โ€” come join us.

We have not had the best week at camp. On Wednesday we stopped at this thrift store but he did not have enough points to play with the toys.

This morning he woke up and said โ€” I want to play with those toys at that store.

So I told him โ€” you have to be your best self today. I want your counselors to tell me you were your awesomest.

Picked him up this afternoon and his counselors told me it was his best day at camp in three weeks.

So of course we made the trek back to the thrift store. A deal is a deal. ๐Ÿค

That boy knows exactly what he is doing.

Fellow parents of big brain toddlers โ€” how are we surviving? ๐Ÿ˜‚

Bounce house yesterday, strep today. Never underestimate how fast sickness can take down a toddler.

Babyโ€™s got some congestion too, but nothing progressive โ€” thankfully ๐Ÿ™Œ

If youโ€™ve got a sick little one right now, this oneโ€™s for you. And if you want to ask me directly, Iโ€™m doing a live Q&A this Wednesday. Comment SLEEP and Iโ€™ll send you the details.

Letโ€™s get into it ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿคง Tip 1 โ€” Clear that nose.
Congestion causes more problems than people realize. Feeds go easier, lungs stay clearer, sleep improves. Get the snot out.

๐Ÿ“… Tip 2 โ€” Let go of the schedule.
If your child is fatigued, listen to it. Earlier naps, more daytime sleep โ€” all bonus. Donโ€™t push bedtime out, move it earlier.

๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿผ Tip 3 โ€” Cuddles are medicine.
Sickness hits the nervous system hard. Daytime closeness and support actually helps overnight sleep. You cannot spoil a sick child with comfort.

๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿผ Tip 4 โ€” Hard play only if fever-free and feeling up to it. Otherwise, nowโ€™s a great time to crack open an unopened gift.

๐Ÿ’ง Tip 5 โ€” Donโ€™t force food. Hydration first.
Eating light while sick helps the body conserve energy for recovery. Fluids are the priority.

Questions about sick sleep, or just donโ€™t know where to start? Come join me live Wednesday. Comment SLEEP and Iโ€™ll send you everything you need. ๐Ÿค

Here is your tea for the day. โ˜• Want to go deeper on this? Our next live Q&A is July 22nd inside Sound Sleepers. Comment SLEEP to join us ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ

There is a difference between a child who is an independent sleeper and a child who sleeps through the night. They are not the same thing.

We all shift in the night โ€” brief arousals that last only a few seconds before we drift right back into sleep. When your child is waking up fully and struggling to get back down, that is not biological. That is a signal something needs adjusting.

A child can put themselves to sleep independently and still wake multiple times in the night. That is the flag.

The goal is restorative sleep. Every sleep cycle connecting without a breaking point. Not just how long they sleep โ€” but the quality of that sleep.

If they wake up and do not know what else to do, their nervous system will need reassurance. That is human nature. But waking up constantly and living off sleep deprivation is not.

Fix the daytime. That is where the answer is.

Save this โ€” you will need it the next time someone tells you to fix how your baby falls asleep.

This is the age where big feelings show up โ€” and zero ability to manage them.

Frustration. Separation anxiety. Overstimulation. Excitement. Rejection. Disappointment. And more!

It all comes out the same way. Loudly. They feel everything. They have words for nothing.

This is also when sleep shifts. More aware, more mobile, more emotionally connected to you โ€” settling feels harder because the world just got a lot bigger for them.

If your one year old is still struggling with sleep โ€” a lot of it is behavioral at this stage and I can help walk you through it. Type SLEEP to learn more ๐Ÿค

This is not a phase you fix. It is a phase you understand โ€” and start to teach through.

Name the feelings out loud. Model your own emotions. Show them what calm looks like so they can eventually find it themselves.

It is not our job to stop the tantrums. It is our job to let them feel safe enough to have them โ€” and be there when they are ready to come out.

This is not their teaching moment. It is ours. They do not have the tools yet. We are building them together.

At what age did you notice the bigger feelings show up? Drop it in the comments ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ

During my pregnancy with baby boy #2, I dealt with some serious hip and pelvic issues โ€” spent most of my third trimester on bed rest. I found myself gravitating back to my Winnie the Pooh days for a little bit of that Disney magic to get through it.

Full circle moment: his first birthday was Winnie the Pooh themed.

Thatโ€™s a wrap on year one. A day so full of love and celebration โ€” still amazed at how many people showed up for our little guy. ๐Ÿค #WinniethePooh #FirstBirthday by @soundsleep_4bubbies
