It's a huge day here at Sound Arts: our textual records all the way back to 1983 are being transferred to the @memorialuniversity Special Collections, where our archive will be accessible to students, researchers, and the general public in the near future. Enormous thanks to Oz and Kathy for their dedication to this important project, helping to preserve our history as we continue to forge ahead with new adventures in sound art 💫 by @soundsymposium

Ripgloss is an electronic musician, songwriter, and multimedia artist from St. John’s, NL who creates sound collages and mixes out of field recordings, rearranged pop songs, and the sounds nature to create textures that could be described as ‘fairies playing tag in a haunted house.’

Inspired by whimsy, drum and bass, italo disco, and post punk, Ripgloss combines the elements in a way that is off-putting but puts the fun in funeral. They also write poems that will probably be sung or spoken over music.

Night Music is an improvisational music series held on the third Thursday of every month at The Ship Pub. It begins with an hour-long performance that serves as the anchor for the evening, after which the stage is opened up to anyone with an interest in improvising. Host Craig Squires puts together inspired groups of musicians who jam until their sonic exploration reaches a natural conclusion. Bring your instrument and join in on the fun!

From the Archives: Diane Labrosse and Martin Tétreault (1998). "The scratches on the vinyl, the dust on the needle, the friction of the needle on the turntable, the amplified arm, the needle jumping, the feedback of unearthed turntables...PARASITES."

From the Archives: Don Wherry's installation "Earth Sounds" at Eastern Edge Artist-Run Centre in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Presented as part of Sound Symposium 6, with the full video available on our YouTube channel, youtube.com/@soundsymposiumNL 📼 From the 1992 booklet:

We like the description about Don which was included in an original article in the Quebec City performance art magazine Inter: "At the centre of a diagram representing the Sound Symposium we find Don Wherry, and we can draw a circle around him in which both his interests and the different aspects of the festival are identical in their content: host, organizer, educator, professor of music at Memorial University, composer, percussionist, environmentalist, inventor of musical instruments, transplanted Ontarian (since 1974), musicologist, improviser, contemporary music fan researcher of things innovative, worldly and original. Don can be distinguished by his participation at unique performances at the Sound Symposium (he was the guy in the boat with the bowl during the filming of the Flume performance last year) as well as his sound constructions and exhibits." by @soundsymposium

The Black Auks have been making sweet noise since 1992.

Born from the ashes of Fusion (Don Wherry's "uptown" avant garde) and Wet Cheese Delerium (Wallace and Craig's "downtown" avant garde), both with roots in the mid 70s and 80s, we've been doing this for 50 years.

Current personnel: Wallace Hammond, Rick Bailey, Neil Rosenberg, Craig Squires, and Mack Furlong.

From the Archives: Trimpin ⚙️🎹 We couldn't put it better than the 1992 booklet: He calls works like this "extending the boundaries of timing structure and sound perception phenomena." In the process of doing this, he may have finally found a virtuosity which belongs to the machine alone.
