Powerful mini cart rig for a nice studio shoot today.

Recording dialogue, triggering audio samples and sound effects, while mixing to speakers in four independent zones, and creating a usable edit mix track on a one shot, “as-live”, 20-ish minute, video game promotional tie-in, horror experience with an expensive talent. Easy 😅

The result of one take, and barely a full tech rehearsal…

Great work by all the crew and the amazing kit that enables work like this.

Keeping it compact for eight radios with the flying faders. No boom today. Dugan Automixer helping calm the storm of chatty influencers.

The ConCart PicNic giving me the platform for the Sound Devices 888, A10 and Wisycom MCR54 and Icon Platform M+.

Full house on the 888 last week. 8 radios out, Dugan Automixer helping to pick out the details on a busy reality shoot!

Having 8 radios out is a great way to work out which of your lav mics aren’t working quite to spec. I’ve had at least 4 of my DPA 4061’s die over the last year with cable failures at both the capsule and connector ends, and one which has a 2 inch long split down the cable. Glad I got my old spare ecm77’s re-terminated to Lemo a few weeks ago! They filled in perfectly and still sound awesome! by @soundunituk

2026 Bag Update

The Audio Wireless DA224-MB. A tiny, lightweight RF distribution amplifier that allows us to run all our receivers through two higher gain antenna mounted to the bag or fins on a stand. The DA224 also has configurable RF filtering to prevent interference from frequencies outside the range of what you’re using.

This replaces the venerable DADM226. The first generation AW RF distro, which had a fixed, more wideband, filter, was considerably larger and probably twice the weight.

To replace the power distribution element on the old DADM226 this little Hirose power box is just this basic power connection box distributed by a few low cost sellers on eBay and Amazon. I’d usually try to use the known industry brands but this is just so cheap and compact. by @soundunituk

Live stream setup from a little while back. Probably the most involved livestream I’ve ever mixed and definitely the longest. The Pokémon Champion of Champions live stream was a blast.

I integrated my 888 into the Dante network and mixed 20 input channels on an Icon Platform M+ control surface. In hindsight I should have taken my second one to give me all of the controls across the big groups of channels I was flipping between for the show.

I had my radio mics running on the AES inputs of the XL AES and another stereo feed for the game spectator output, music cues from an Ableton session on the USB, 3 channels of commentary boxes (in and out) and graphics cued audio over Dante; as well as rerouting all of those inputs and my mixes back to the various comms feeds, also running on the Dante network. (Oh and a last minute request to feed the super basic PA at front of house)

It could have been easier on a “proper” live console with all the customisation options that affords. But I made it work because I know the 888 so well, and did a decent enough job that I might have another stream like this coming up soon to expand on what I learned on this one! by @soundunituk

Compact multi channel recording with the Zoom F8. 4 channels of Audio Ltd / Sound Devices and 4 channels of Wisycom.

Why can’t I hear anything?

Oops 😬 😅 by @soundunituk

Minimalist mic prep area today!

These XTAR lithium AA rechargeable are expensive but great. I’ve been using them fairly extensively in my A10 radios for the last 6 months. Run times rival NiMH. You also get a low battery warning on your telemetry as they drop to a lower voltage when they are running low. Early anecdotal testing shows they have 10 to 15 minutes once it drops down.

A Sound Crew on the beach 🇮🇪
That was a pretty mad 5 weeks! by @soundunituk

Back on the trusty old OG Zoom F8 for a job or two while my SD 888 is off on long term loan. What a great lightweight rig with these two receivers offering me 6 channels of radios and leaves me with two more fully featured mic pres.
