June 20th, Lu and I were honored to march alongside our dear friend-fam @GaryBaseman in his PEACE THRU PURR performance at Los Angeles' inaugural Art Parade — a joyful, large-scale public procession created by @jeffreydeitchgallery and presented by @LACMA in celebration of the opening of the David Geffen Galleries.

Marching down Wilshire Boulevard, I thought about how lucky I was to be celebrating art, community, and creativity with Lulu at an age when doing public things can feel mortifying and exciting all at once. Stray cat strutting under the museum-bridge, I turned to @Hysteric.wav and said, “This is a historic occasion and we are so lucky to experience it as participants!” Then I blurted out that when she's twice her age, she'll look back and realize just how extraordinary it was to have performed for 60,000 open-hearted Angelenos on that sunny, clear, perfect LA day.

More than once, a Cheshire grin took over as I glanced over at Gary, @graydenise, @lulasphinx, our extended cat clowder, and fellow parade partakers smiling out at a crowd that beamed right back.

The joy was infectious; a reminder that art is so very good for us. It forces us to acknowledge our humanity, our playfulness, and our desire to connect with ourselves and each other.

To everyone who attended The Art Parade last weekend, we are the lucky ones.

Peace! ✌️🏼🕊️✌️🏼

With the start of the new year, there’s so much important life stuff to reflect on from the previous year, but I’d rather move forward with things like cleaning up my inbox. I unsubscribe from all the newsletters I don’t read (type “is:unread older_than:1y” into your Gmail search bar) and release myself from the burden of the bold.

But yooo, can anyone out there help me unsubscribe from the “@Deadline the Process” newsletter? No matter how many times I click the unsubscribe link, visit the “manage your subscriptions” page, uncheck the individual subscription, or click “unsubscribe from all,” they still refuse to let me go. But they will pretend to do so with a reassuring pop-up window claiming I’ll be cared for in 24 hours… but it’s all lies.

Sometimes Deadline stops sending me this newsletter for a few months, but like an estradiol patch rash, it inevitably comes back and bothers me again. I’ll keep unsubscribing because I don’t want to blacklist their domain— please don’t suggest blocking it.

As the emergency contact for dozens of friends and the executor/guardian of a few trusts/kids, I know I am good enough and don’t feel the need to declare that I will be a much better person this upcoming year. That said, I will try really hard not to lose it when my family shares the few photos of me on holiday, with my eyes closed, my hair a mess, or only in super-posed pictures. I will work on that, but they could also improve as photographers.

I already feel like I’m growing wiser. Look at me overcoming my perfection paralysis and publishing this post now, even though the evening is not a good time for engagement with my old ass friends.

I look forward to showing up on your social calendar the way Deadline appears in my Gmail inbox.

My mom asked all five of her children to gather this Christmas. With siblings scattered across the globe in London, Orlando, Seattle, and Victoria, B.C., Los Angeles seemed as good a place as any to meet for the first time in eight years.

Like all previous Hong reunions, the activities focused on family, friends, food, and lots of yell-talking. The holiday was both physically and emotionally exhausting and rewarding.
